The Red Tent: A Novel

by Anita Diamant

Picador | August 21, 2007 | Trade Paperback

A New York Times Bestseller

A decade after the publication of this hugely popular international bestseller, Picador releases the tenth anniversary edition of The Red Tent.

Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that tell of her father, Jacob, and his twelve sons.

Told in Dinah''s voice, Anita Diamant imagines the traditions and turmoils of ancient womanhood--the world of the red tent. It begins with the story of the mothers--Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah--the four wives of Jacob. They love Dinah and give her gifts that sustain her through childhood, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign land. Dinah''s story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate connection with the past.

Deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytelling with a valuable achievement in modern fiction: a new view of biblical women''s lives.

If you're a student of the old testament, you will maybe know the name of Dinah. She's mentioned briefly in Genesis, but you aren't given any details. Anita Diamant decided to envision what the "rest of the story" of Dinah's life might have been.

I don't think it is exaggerating to call this an epic. Diamant has created a rich, detailed, colourful, lush and exciting backdrop to tell the story she's imagined for Dinah. It is by turns, engaging, exciting, terrifying and sad. The characters are brought fully to life, and are multi-layered and realistic, as in, more greys than black-and-white - just like life really is.

You don't have to be a bible reader or devout to enjoy this book at all! You just have to enjoy well-written, thoughtfully developed historical fiction and colourful interesting characters. I loved this book and highly recommend it as an excellent read!

This book is one of the best books I have read in quite some time. I am not particularly a religious person so I don't know a lot of bible stories, but Diamant is a fantastic story teller that weaves the story so well that you can't help but be intrigued. A wonderful story of family, betrayal and redemption. All women can learn about themselves, their sisters, their mother and their friends from this book.
