From the Publisher

The Canadian Classic, written by Pierre Berton and illustrated by his daughter, Patsy is now a 26 episode animated children's series on CBC television beginning Saturday, September 9, 2006. Berton often cited The Secret World of Og as his favourite of his forty-seven books. It has sold more than 200,000 copies in four editions.

The series follows the five Berton children, Penny, Pamela, Peter, Patsy, and baby Paul (better-known as "The Pollywog") as they discover and explore a vast, mysterious world of caverns and rivers hidden beneath a trapdoor in the floor of their clubhouse. In their subterranean adventures, they befriend the little green inhabitants called Ogs, share their worldly knowledge with them, and, at the same time, gain a little wisdom themselves.

The series is directed by Paul Schibli who also directed the long-running CBC series The Raccoons.

About the Author

Pierre Berton was one of Canada's most popular and prolific authors. From narrative histories and popular culture, to picture and coffee table books to anthologies, to stories for children to readable, historical works for youth, many of his fifty books are now Canadian classics.

Born in 1920 and raised in the Yukon, Pierre Berton worked in Klondike mining camps during his university years. He spent four years in the army, rising from private to captain/instructor at the Royal Military College in Kingston. He spent his early newspaper career in Vancouver, where at 21 he was the youngest city editor on any Canadian daily. He wrote columns for and was editor of Maclean's magazine, appeared on CBC's public affairs program "Close-Up" and was a permanent fixture on "Front Page Challenge" for 39 years. He was a columnist and editor for the Toronto Star and was a writer and host of a series of CBC programs.

Pierre Berton received over 30 literary awards including the Governor-General's Award for Creative Non-Fiction (three times), the Stephen Leacock Medal of Humour, and the Gabrielle Leger National Heritage Award. He received two Nellies for his work in broadcasting, two National Newspaper awards, and the National History Society's first award for "distinguished achievement in popularizing Canadian history." For his immense contribution to Canadian literature and history, he was awarded more than a dozen honourary degrees, is a member of the Newsman's Hall of Fame, and is a Companion of the Order of Canada.

Pierre Berton passed away in Toronto on November 30, 2004.

    Great Book on Imagination 3

"There are no days in life so memorable as those which vibrated to some stroke of the imagination." Ralph Waldo Emerson This book doesn't talk down to kids, and is illustrated by Berton's own daughter, I believe.

Wow!! I can't believe I actually found this book!! I haven't read it since grade four. The first time I heard this book, my grade three teacher, Mrs. Deanne Pilchak, read it to my class. From that moment on I was in love with it!! I am now in grade 11 and after my teacher moved, after grade four, I hadn't heard about this book!! I really hope to buy this book because it is not only a great book, it's filled to the rim with memories for me!! Thank you so much for having it on here!!

Seriously... my Great Gramma gave me this book when I was 8 (when it first came out - she knew Pierre Berton, but thought he was a little too high on himself. hehe..) But I am glad she got the book anyway because altho' it is his only children's book (that I'm aware of) I LOVED it! and still do. I read this book over & over again. I still have the original (this cover is the reprint). I would highly recommend this for the 8-12 year old on your list this year. Of course, there is a cartoon… read more

I remember sneaking into the school library when I was 9 years old, finding this book on the shelf, and even though I was a much more advanced reader, loving the book more than any thing else I had ever read. I returned the tattered book to the library, but days later wanted to read it again! Unfortunately it was gone from the library, never to return. I've been searching for this book for years. It's absolutely amazing, and I recommend it to anyone. I mean, it would have to be, for… read more

I read this book in school and remember it as being fantastic, it influenced a lot of my drawings at the time. I've often thought about it over the years and wondered if it was still in print. I ran across it today and have ordered it. I can't wait to read it as an adult!

My fourth grade teacher, Miss McCarthy, read this book to my class a chapter at a time each day, I read a public library copy the same way to my two youngest sons who loved it as much as I did. I purchased last week, a copy as a gift for my grandson whom I imagine will love it as much as the rest of us. When I read it aloud to the children I often had to stop to contain my own laughter in order to continue. I hope that it never goes out of print.

I discovered this book through my children, read it to them, and I think I enjoyed it more myself than they did. This has got to be the best children's book ever written. My children have enjoyed this book emmensely, reading it over again themselves and having me read it, that I have it on order. We were continually renewing this book from the library, I thought it best that we own our own copy.
