If you've ever worked in the field of social work or been involved in the care system in some way, then you'll be able to relate to the very real characters in this story. There are shocks a plenty as you follow the path that Joey, the novel's central character, takes to claw himself out of the terrible life he was born into and the risks he takes trying to help others do the same.

The writing is fast paced and relentless. You just need to know what is going to happen next to the characters. The Social Worker is one of those books that you are sad to finish, because you are so invested in the lives you've followed.
