The Story of Edgar Sawtelle

by Random House

Doubleday Canada | September 19, 2008 | Hardcover

A riveting family saga, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle explores the deep and ancient alliance between humans and dogs, and the power of fate through one boy's epic journey into the wild.

Born mute, speaking only in sign, Edgar Sawtelle leads an idyllic life with his parents on their farm in remote northern Wisconsin. For generations, the Sawtelles have raised and trained a fictional breed of dog whose thoughtful companionship is epitomized by Almondine, Edgar''s lifelong companion. But with the unexpected return of Claude, Edgar''s uncle, turmoil consumes the Sawtelle''s once-peaceful home. When Edgar''s father dies suddenly, Claude insinuates himself into the life of the farm - and into Edgar''s mother's affections.

Grief-stricken and bewildered, Edgar tries to prove Claude played a role in his father''s death, but his plan backfires, spectacularly. Edgar flees into the vast wilderness lying beyond the farm. He comes of age in the wild, fighting for his survival and that of the three yearling dogs who follow him. But his need to face his father's murderer, and his devotion to the Sawtelle dogs, turn Edgar ever homeward.

Wroblewski is a master storyteller, and his breathtaking scenes - the elemental north woods, the sweep of seasons, an iconic American barn, a ghost made of falling rain - create a family saga that is at once a brilliantly inventive retelling of Hamlet, an exploration of the limits of language, and a compulsively readable modern classic.

    A Fantastic Debut Novel

    MacFly

Always one to wait until the hype of a book dies down before reading it, I only read this book this month. First of, for a first novel from an author - WOW! How we would all love to produce a book like this. I loved reading about how the Sawtelle farm came to me and the breeding of the fictional dogs of this novel. All of it kept me enthralled. I confess I found the time when Edgar was on the run to be a bit long, but in the end I understood that it was necessary for the end of the book. And the end of the book...I wasn't unhappy with what happened to everyone in the end...well, a little bit but I can get over the fact that not every book has a happy ending. My struggle is that I don't think I understood the ending! Especially the part about the dogs leaving. I had to go online just to see if I was the only one who didn't get it! I did learn that there were many opinions on just what the ending meant...which made me feel a bit better. All in all, thought, I think this was a very well written book that I very much enjoyed reading.

    Bravo Mr Wroblewski!
Not very often, do you come across a book that is so spellbinding as this one. It grips you from the very first page and does'nt let go. Hard to believe this is a debut novel. Well done, I'm eagerly awaiting more books from this author.
A definite must read - pick up a copy of this novel, you will not be disappointed.
