    His Dark Materials #2

"The Subtle Knife" is the second book in Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. And it's just as good, even a little better, than the first book, "The Golden Compass".

In this second book we're introduced to Will, who comes from a world very much like our own and one that is very different from Lyra's world. The conflict between God, the Church, and creation intensifies and becomes much more than just a battle between good and bad. I like the way the story moves back and forth between different worlds, between the different characters that make the book what it is...Lyra and her obstinate and innocent personality...Will and his determination to find his father...Serafina Pekkala the witch and her daemon Kaisa, a large grey goose...and Lee Scoresby and his drive to once again find and protect Lyra.

There are many online reviews of this trilogy that are complex in their attempt to thoroughly demystify this story...lots of theories about the different worlds that exist one beside the other. I chose not to get involved with any of the reasons why and wherefore Pullman wrote these books...instead I'm just enjoying the writing, the story, the characters.
