Then the giant, forbidding Allanon revaled that the supposedly dead Warlock Lord was plotting to destory the world. The sole weapon against this Power of Darkness was the Sword of Shannara, which could only be used by a true heir of Shannara--Shea being the last of the bloodline, upon whom all hope rested. I would've probably never read this book if it weren't given to me as a gift by an aunt. As I began to read the book, I couldn't shake the thought "I've already read this... but it was written much better." It was scary how similar this book was to The Lord of the Rings. I was not very interested at all in what I was reading, and found it to be pretty boring. And the plot was kinda simple and sorta lame. I probably wouldn't have finished this book but then I found the receipt and saw how much my aunt paid for it. Since it was too late to return it, I decided to force myself to finish it. (It was the hardcover version containing the whole trilogy, so I think it was almost $60). I am glad I forced myself to keep reading, because at about 2/3 of the way through, I actually was interested in what was going on. I also thought the ending and how the warlock lord was defeated was well done and really fit the story. But the question is, is it worth buying the whole book for a good last third? Probably not, and I doubt I'll ever re-read it. I'll stick to Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, which is by the way a whole dozen level's better than Shannara. I have to say though, I found the second book, Elfstones of Shannara, to be very good.

Authors normally start off with one trully amazing book than slowly the works start to become more and more downhill. Not with Terry Brooks. He started off an average writer than slowly as the books progressed it became an amazing series that you almost refuse to put down. I recommend to buy the entire series though once you've read the first one its a must.

The action in The Sword of Shannara, from author Terry Brooks, begins when the supposedly dead Warlock Lord begins to plan his revenge and destroy all in his path. However, in the peaceful Shady Vale the half-elfin Shea Ohmsford knows of no such danger. When word does reach him, he knows that the only weapon that can prevent total destruction at the hands of the Power of Darkness is the Sword of Shannara, which can only be used by a true Shea bloodline.
