The Thirteenth Tale

by SETTERFIELD DIANE

Doubleday Canada | December 15, 2008 | Hardcover

Biographer Margaret Lea returns one night to her apartment above her father''s antiquarian bookshop. On her steps she finds a letter. It is a hand-written request from one of Britain's most prolific and well-loved novelists. Vida Winter, gravely ill, wants to recount her life story before it is too late, and she wants Margaret to be the one to capture her history. The request takes Margaret by surprise-she doesn't know the author, nor has she read any of Miss Winter's dozens of novels.
Late one night, while pondering whether to accept the task of recording Miss Winter's personal story, Margaret begins to read her father's rare copy of Miss Winter's Thirteen Tales of Change and Desperation. She is spellbound by the stories and confused when she realizes the book only contains twelve stories. Where is the thirteenth tale? Intrigued, Margaret agrees to meet Miss Winter and act as her biographer.
As Vida Winter unfolds her story, she shares with Margaret the dark family secrets that she has long kept hidden as she remembers her days at Angelfield, the now burnt-out estate that was her childhood home. Margaret carefully records Miss Winter's account and finds herself more and more deeply immersed in the strange and troubling story. In the end, both women have to confront their pasts and the weight of family secrets. As well as the ghosts that haunt them still.

Margaret Lea toils away in her father's antiquarian bookstore writing obscure articles and biographies on little known subjects. Late one day she receives a letter from Vida Winter, the most famous and prolific writer of the day (think Margaret Atwood), summoning her to her home for the purpose of writing her biography.

Margaret is intrigued - but little does she know, what is in store for her. Vida will tell the truth - and only the truth of her life. But Margaret must promise not to ask any questions, push the story along or ask for the ending before Vida is truly ready to tell it.

And so Vida begins the tale of the Angelfield family, whose lives unfold against the backdrop of their secluded estate in the English countryside. We come upon three generations - a father who becomes despondent when the wife he loves dies in childbirth, his two children, Charles and Isabelle whose dependent and bizarrely destructive relationship ends when Isabelle is taken to an asylum for the mentally deranged, and the twins Emmeline and Adeline, the product of a brief affair between Isabelle and a Romeo who crossed her path. We are totally drawn into their lives and yet the connection between the Angelfields and Vida Winter remains a mystery. Until that is, Margaret manages to put some disconnected fragments of the story together. And then, Vida is truly ready to let go of her deepest secrets.

The Thirteenth Tale is a magnificent story. So well written, so well imagined. It is the kind of book one should save for the first rainy fall day. Start reading at nine in the morning with a pot of tea by your side. And know it will be the wee hours of the night before you put this book down.

A very unusual read but yet I couldn't put it down. Slow at first but definetly picked up. Gave it to my friend after I read it and just looked at each other after we both had finished and went "it was different but good".

    Edge of your seat...

This book will keep even the most sophisticated reader on the edge of their seat. Guessing the ending of seeing through the plot is just not possible with this book. Diane Setterfield has created a world unlike any other. The reader will be drawn into the character's lives and live out their hopes and wishes. For any "bookaholic" out there this is an ideal read because it puts you inside the mind of an author and how stories are woven together for our pleasure!

    Interesting...but...

The story of Vida Winter's life was very intriging, and there were many twists and turns. Some were really good and made you go wow! Really? But some were so confusing that, at times, the story was turned upside down, and what you thought while reading the first four fifths of the book, is now, not true anymore, and you have to completely change your way of reading the rest of the story.
Other than a misleading ending, (which some people would really enjoy), the book was well written, and I could picture it all in my head.

I loved this book! The way the describes the protagonist's love of reading is something I can relate to. Poetic at times, the story flowed from one event to the next, while dropping clues as to what the "truth" is.

The Reader follows the story as one of the world's greatest contemporary authors decides to tell her true history once and for all to a young woman who draws parallels to her own past as the history unfolds. I would not say that this story is suspenseful, but there is a definite drive to see it through to the end. Ghosts, giants, twins and insanity make for an unbelievable must-read!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Diane is a fantastic writer - literally - the quality of the writing and her style blew most modern authors out of the water. If you're looking for a well written page-turner, this is it. And if this is only her first book, I can't wait to see what she writes in the future!

This is a hard one to get into - but well worth the read. Lots of "red herrings". However, I have not been this "creeped out" by a mystery in years. Don't give up on it - keep reading and soon you will not be able to put it down. I wasn't expecting the "answer" so to speak!

This book kept me engrossed and I read it in one day. Sometimes her turn of phrase was so beautiful I had to stop and read the sentance over again. Although the story line has a few aberrant moments, the overall book is fantastic.

I don't normally read regular fiction, but I know lots of friends who have read this and raved. I even went to her book signing and listened to her talking and I didn't really understand till I read the book myself. It starts somewhat slowly but still somehow captivated my attention, the tale unfolds into a mystery that keeps you guessing and when you think you've got it figured out you don't even have a clue. When I got to the end it was shocking yet still satisfying I wished that she would have kept writing to give me more.

The Thirteenth Tale will feed your imagination with beautifully written imagery and a great story to keep those pages turning well into the night. Encapturing your "readers spirit" with the mystery of Vida Winter's life and Margaret Lea's search for her truth...it's a book you'll want to experience again, once its all over with.

It was a great story with lots of twists and turns. I didn't see the ending coming until the last 35 pages which is a rare occurence. I didn't want to put the book down and read it in two sittings even with my two children running around.

For the first few pages, I thought this book was going to go slowly. It wasn't until Vida Winter started telling the truth about her past to her biographer, that it became so compelling and drew me in. And it didn't let me go until I got to the last page. This is what a work of fiction is supposed to be: riveting, complex, intricate, and full of characters that draw you into their lives.

A novel you engross yourself in and don't want to put down. I thoroughly enjoyed escaping into this novel and even after finishing it I can't seem to pull myself away from it. The author has done a great job, the book flowed smoothly and kept the reader guessing all the way through. I highly recommend this book.

I was excited to read this one as several friends had said, "A must read. You won't be able to put it down." I had a hard time picking it up. Dreary, dull and long winded. Disappointing to wait to the end to be the least bit interesting.

When I gave this title to a friend and told her to read it, she called me a few days later to say "What do I do now? The irony is that the book talks about this...the love of books, quirky characters, a good story and the lingering desire to want more. Mothers who never get to read will leave dishes, laundry, and order pizza for dinner just to finish this book!!! Reads like an edge-of-your-seat movie but better.
Treat yourself, you will not be sorry.

This was a twisted tale to read! Despite the complexity of multiple characters, I couldn't put it down. I found you were able to predict the relation between some characters but the ending was still a bit of a surprise. Enjoyed it immensely!

    Can't Put it Down

    Katarzyna Christensen

This book is so great that I can't put it down at night. My eyes get sore and I refill my tea cup way too many times. It's a love hate realtionship for I want to keep reading to find out more, but I don't want the story to end, for it's such a beautifully written book. It has similarities and links to Jane Eyre (one of my favorites). It's a mysterious, spellbinding, page turning, nail biting great read. totally recommend it.
