Audrey Niffenegger''s innovative debut, The Time Traveler''s Wife, is the story of Clare, a beautiful art student, and Henry, an adventuresome librarian, who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry thirty-one. Impossible but true, because Henry finds himself periodically displaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

The Time Traveler's Wife depicts the effects of time travel on Henry and Clare''s marriage and their passionate love for each other, as the story unfolds from both points of view. Clare and Henry attempt to live normal lives, pursuing familiar goals -- steady jobs, good friends, children of their own. All of this is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor control, making their story intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.

From the Critics

"Highly original first novel…Niffenegger has written a soaring love story illuminated by dozens of finely observed details and scenes…It is a fair tribute to [Niffenegger's] skill and sensibility to say that the book leaves a reader with the impression of life's riches and strangeness rather than of easy thrills."
-Publishers Weekly, starred review

"An enchanting novel…beautifully crafted and as dazzlingly imaginative as it is dizzyingly romantic."
-Scott Turow

"[This] inventive and poignant writing is well worth a trip."
-Entertainment Weekly

"A powerfully original love story … [An] amazing trip."
-People

"Niffenegger creates real characters with flawed, human, loving characteristics and with real and extraordinary problems….Niffeneger succeeds in telling a tender tale of love and allows the reader to rediscover an old fascination with the idea of time travel."

"Niffenegger keeps her readers' attention with a faultless ear for dialogue and with the freshness of her premise."
-National Post

"[An] oddly compelling and original formulation…. This is Niffenegger's first novel, yet it is remarkably free of many of the common pitfalls of a freshman effort. … Niffenegger keeps her readers' attention with a faultless ear for dialogue and with the freshness of her premise. … Her touch for comedy is assured, and acts to leaven more sober aspects of the novel."
-The National Post

"Niffenegger's storytelling is bold, confident and entrancing. Her prose is warm and inviting. And her characters are created with heartfelt sincerity. There's a lot to love in this book….The Time Traveller's Wife is an engrossing read that keeps both emotions and intellect entertained."
-The Gazette

"[Niffenegger] is a hypnotic weaver; her dimensional characters are blended in a tightly woven design that make this first novel a work of art. It leaves one in awe, and appreciative….Do yourself a favour: read the book and suspend your notions of time."
- Independently reviewed

"This is a seamless, soaring love story….As the last pages of this 500-page novel loomed closer, I felt all of the wonderful emotions of having read an unabashed, brilliantly written love story….The Time Traveller's Wife is not a Christmas story, but it is the perfect read for the holiday. Like the emotions of the season it will leave you laughing, crying, and babbling incoherently to your family and friends who will, do doubt, attempt to steal the book away when you aren't looking. Be warned. Buy that special someone their own copy - now."
-The Sun Times (Owen Sound)

    Lovely and worthwhile 4

This review is from: The Time Traveler's Wife (Hardcover)

Slightly difficult for me to get into, the book begins by slowly drawing in the reader and yet throwing them into the story at the same time. It is difficult to follow the jumping dates and I often found myself going back to find where we were in time. Some hilarious moments make it easier to deal with the difficulties that Clare and Henry face due to the circumstances. The end is beautiful and unclear all at once. Certainly recommend by myself, I was intrigued by the store after seeing the… read more

    My favourite of 2005! 5

This review is from: The Time Travelers Wife (Abridged): Abridged Edition (Audio Book (CD))

I listened to this book over the course of a week – and unabridged, that was a lot of listening time – but I simply could not put it down (or, I guess, “turn it off” is more accurate). It became, by year’s end, my favourite book that I read (or “listened to”) in all of 2005. A good portion of the reason why is the audio casting – the two voices; one for Richard, one for Claire – are phenomenal. They turn an already strong character-based story into a visceral emotional journey that scoops… read more

The best I've "heard" all year! 5

This review is from: The Time Travelers Wife (unabridged): Unabridged Edition (Audio Book (CD))

This is, hands down, my favourite book of the year to date. Charming, smart, touching, well-crafted, and just downright interesting! Clare meets Henry when she is six, and he is thirty-six, but Henry doesn't meet Clare until he is twenty-eight, and she is twenty. Confused? Henry is chronologically displaced - he time-travels. He doesn't control it, is morbidly afraid of mundane dangers (he arrives naked in whenever he travels, so he's terrified of frostbite, for example). Don't worry, though… read more

    Amazing! 5

This review is from: The Time Traveler's Wife (Hardcover)

There aren't many words other than "superb" or "innovative" to Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife. Her creative writing mixed with her complex plot and subplots, produce something magical, some may even argue, timeless. The main characters are Clare Abshire and Henry DeTamble , who has a very rare genetic disorder, which comes to be known as Chrono-Displacement , which enables him to jump forwards and backwards through time. Here's the catch, it only happens unexpectedly. The… read more

Love in the Past, Present, and Future 3

This review is from: The Time Traveler's Wife (Hardcover)

Clare Abshire is six when she meets her future husband, Henry DeTamble, who is thirty-six at the time. Alternately, Henry is twenty-eight when he meets Clare, twenty. Confused already? Henry is the time traveler of the title. He can’t command it, can’t direct it, and he can’t bring anything with him on the trip, which means he leaves a pile of clothes on the ground when he jumps to and fro. If you can navigate the time changes (which are aided by dates and ages) and swallow the… read more

    Heartwarming Love Story 5

This book might be a little hard to get hooked on. The beginning was a little confusing and slow. Actually the whole book was slow, but incredibly romantic. If you're into romance, I would definitely suggest this novel. I've watched the movie and you can't get even a tiny portion of the amount of emotion you get from the book. Once you're into the story, which happened around 1/2 way for me, you won't want to put it down. Incredibly romantic and really makes you wonder if that kind of love… read more

    The Time Traveller's Wife 5

This review is from: The Time Traveler's Wife (Hardcover)

This book changed my life. Simply that. This moving story places the reader in the emotionally charged world of Claire and Henry and the conclusion of the book leaves you with tears in your eyes. This is a very unique book, vastly well-written. Although to begin with, the reader may experience some bewilderment as he/she falls into the story, this is quickly overcome and the result is a very satisfying and soul nourishing read. I adored this book and I will be reading it again. A… read more

    Closest To Perfection, Ever. 5

Of all the books I have ever read, this book will stay close to my heart as the closest to perfection and as one of my favourites. The writing style is astounding, although, I wouldn't recommend it to younger teens. The characters and plotline were very well thought out - the idea of time travel actually seemed possible whilst reading the novel. The ending is perfect; tears came to my eyes. It takes a certain amount of maturity to handle the content in the novel, but I absolutely recommend it… read more

I picked up this book thinking it would be completely different than it was. I expected a tale of adventure and I got romance. I blame myself for choosing something so terrible to read. I really didn't like it and couldn't get into it. I read a few pages and felt tormented as I kept reading. Not my type of book. Too confusing and incoherent. I think the biggest problem was that I was expecting something else than what I got. read more

    I wasn't in love with it 3

I have to admit. I saw the movie first. Prior to that the book didn't interest me all that much, but when I saw the movie I decided why the hell not? So I've just finished it and I have to say that, while I did like it (hence the star rating of 3), I wasn't blown away by the writing. Or the storyline for that matter. Sometimes I wonder if this has to do with the fact that I saw the movie first and therefore wasn't all that surprised. The way the story was broken up was interesting. I… read more
