The Well-trained Mind

by Susan Wise Bauer, Jessie Wise

W. W. Norton & Company, Incorporated | May 12, 2009 | Hardcover

This educational bestseller has dominated its field for the last decade, sparking a homeschooling movement that has only continued to grow. It will instruct you, step by step, on how to give your child an academically rigorous, comprehensive education from preschool through high school. Two veteran home educators outline the classical pattern of education?the trivium?which organizes learning around the maturing capacity of the child's mind. With this model, you will be able to instruct your child in all levels of reading, writing, history, geography, mathematics, science, foreign languages, rhetoric, logic, art, and music, regardless of your own aptitude in those subjects.

Newly revised and updated, The Well-Trained Mind includes detailed book lists with complete ordering information; up-to-date listings of resources, publications, and Internet links; and useful contact information.

We had to extract our 2 youngest from a nasty situation in their school. We started homeschooling. I was so lost! I know I had to register with a board, but beyond that...where to go? Homeschool has many many philosophies, I had to find out where to fit in. I don't fit into 'unschooling' I know my kids, we'd learn nothing, not Waldorf, not Charlotte Mason. I felt it was school at home, and I didn't want to do that. A fellow homeschooler recommended this book to me. I signed it out of the library. It is Classical Education, it is based on the Trivium, 3 stages of learning, grammar, logic and rhetoric And it suits us soooo well. I have one in each of the two stages. They are learning the same content in many subject. The youngest the basic facts, the older more in depth and a little theory to answer the why.

Within a very short time, my kids were learning and learning WELL. We are still babies in terms of homeschooling, but in the short time the kids have been home, they have learned so much, covered things that should have been but never were in the school system. Well Trained Minds even has lists of quality curricula , books and resources. A must read for homeschoolers.

They authors also have a forum. www.welltrainedmind.com lots of fantastic support there!
