Beautifully illustrated, a bit lacking in focus

This book has been on-and-off my mind since I this year's Free Comic Book Day. I passed by their table, my eye was caught by the illustrations there, and was further struck by the setting. I finally got around to picking up a copy and I am both impressed and disappointed. The illustrations were gorgeous - perfectly suited to the storyline. As for the storyline itself, the beginning was great, the ending was AWESOME, but I lost interest during the middle. Overall, I enjoyed reading this and look forward to the next one, although given how Volume 1 ended, Volume 2's plot is going to have to be stunner. How will Jim Munroe compensate for the loss of one his world's major attention-grabbers?
