Thirteen Days

by Robert F Kennedy
Foreword by: Arthur Jr Schlesinger

Norton | August 15, 1999 | Trade Paperback

In October 1962, when the United States confronted the Soviet Union over its installation of missiles in Cuba, few people shared the behind-the-scenes story as it is told here by the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy. In this unique account, he describes the hour-by-hour negotiations, with particular attention to the actions and views of his brother, President John F. Kennedy.

America sends a U2 jet over Cuba, and takes suspicious pictures That seems to be missile silos. After looking at the pictures by experts for a day or two President Kennedy and this administration realizes that the Russians are putting missiles in Cuba. After much talking and arguing the decision to put a blockade around Cuba is made. A short time later the Russians send ships on orders to go to Cuba. Now what will the Americans do? Will they board Russian ships? If so will this cause a nuclear war? Now That's what I call tension, and stress. Lucky for all of us the Russian decided to turn their ships back, and the blockade worked. Yet this was only the first step. Roughly a week later the Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev announce he would remove all missiles from from Cuba, and people of the world were able to breathe once again. Also be thankful that President Kennedy was smart enough not to listen to his Generals. All the Generals could think of doing was nuking the Russians. Even before the Generals knew all the facts. The Generals even wanted to nuke Russia after the crisis was over. The Generals thought it was a trick, of some kind. Never mind the fact that this could have been the end of mankind.
