I picked up this book from a library shelf only because it contained short stories and I had been having difficulty committing to reading novels during the weeks after my mother's death. The book turned into the best thing that I could have read while I was on the slippery slope of grief, running down into the Holiday season. More than one story will connect with any one's past Christmases of family difficulties or emotional loss, and also especially with the multi-tasking women of the 90s. Although many stories do not have a 'happy ever after/Merry Christmas to all' ending, the collection connects the reader with the universe of struggle and change, which seems magnified during the Holidays. After reading all the stories, the reader is not so alone, not so without hope. And has spent some quality quiet reading time, for just a short while seculded from the daily seasonal demands. Share this book with those closest to you any time of the year.
