I like novels that veer from tragedy to comedy and back again, often so quickly I don't realize when I stopped crying and started laughing. This is one of those novels. I read The Garneau Block a few years ago, which is more funny and less sad, but this one has a big, sometimes nasty heart which lends it a kind of seriousness we don't often see in Canadian writing. That "Man, isn't life an embarrassment" kind of seriousness. Anyway, I quite loved this book, and I can't decide whether the ending is happy or sad - a good thing. Highly recommended.
