Tricks

by Ellen Hopkins

Margaret K. McElderry Books | August 25, 2009 | Hardcover

"When all choice is taken from you, life becomes a game of survival."

Five teenagers from different parts of the country. Three girls. Two guys. Four straight. One gay. Some rich. Some poor. Some from great families. Some with no one at all. All living their lives as best they can, but all searching...for freedom, safety, community, family, love. What they don''t expect, though, is all that can happen when those powerful little words "I love you" are said for all the wrong reasons.

Five moving stories remain separate at first, then interweave to tell a larger, powerful story -- a story about making choices, taking leaps of faith, falling down, and growing up. A story about kids figuring out what sex and love are all about, at all costs, while asking themselves, "Can I ever feel okay about myself?"

A brilliant achievement from New York Times best-selling author Ellen Hopkins -- who has been called "the bestselling living poet in the country" by mediabistro.com -- Tricks is a book that turns you on and repels you at the same time. Just like so much of life.

This was a pretty good book. A little to far fetched for some of the stories about the five teens, but non the less, I am old enough to know where she is going with the thought patterns of these sexaul incounters. And i think she did a great job portraying young girls and boys who pull "tricks".

    Eye Opening

Reading the beginning of this novel, I knew right away that it was going to be really good. Turns out, it was amazing. Following the lived of these five teenagers was a big eye-opener as to just what certain people are going through and what people and factors in their lives can drive them to do. From being sent away for falling in love, to being kicked out of home for being gay, everything in between only adds to the intensity and harsh conditions of this novel.

It focuses around these five adolescents who, under unique circumstances to each of them, must resolve to prositution to get to their "goals", be it paying the rent, havin a place to stay, saving the family from bankruptcy, buying drugs, or finding the way back to the one that they are madly in love with.Whoever the character and whatever they suffer through, you can truly see what type of life they are living and how emotionally and physically harsh their lives are.

The writing style is quite different, as it uses poems with verses, stanzas, etc. The content inside is amazing, to put it in simplest terms. It gives you a real and emotional look into the lives of these teens and although they're fictional, it's not hard to believe that there ARE teens out there who, under the same or similar ciscumstances, must result to the exact same thing, whether by choice or by force.

Overall, I would highly reccomend this novel to anyone around 14+.

Emily - thank you for your thoughtful and informative reviews... although I am almost wishing people would stop reviewing good books... how am I ever going to get in control of my addiction if everyone keep enabling me... Nevertheless - thanks. It's nice to read a well written and considered review.

Tricks is about five teenagers from different walks of life, that for some reason or other are questioning love, and looking for it. Two of them find it with the same sex, the other three find it with the opposite. One boy falls in love with gambling and one girl falls in love with a hard, addictive drug. In the end, they all end up in Vegas, doing things they never thought they would.
As always, Ellen writes a fast-paced novel about the harder things in life. I love how she doesn't sugar coat anything, gives it to us the way it would happen in real life. Definitely another must read!

That's one of my favorite things about reading her books is like you said that she doesn't sugar coat. I also find that with it being in verse you get to the point of what the person is saying a lot sooner, and there's no fancy filler words. its just the cold hard truth
