Troy: Lord Of The Silver Bow

by David Gemmell

Transworld | April 4, 2006 | Mass Market Paperbound

He is a man of many names. Some call him the Golden One; others, the Lord of the Silver Bow. To the Dardanians, he is Prince Aeneas. But to his friends, he is Helikaon. Strong, fast, quick of mind, he is a bold warrior, hated by his enemies, feared even by his Trojan allies. For there is a darkness at the heart of the Golden One, a savagery that, once awakened, can be appeased only with blood.

Argurios the Mykene is a peerless fighter, a man of unbending principles and unbreakable will. Like all of the Mykene warriors, he lives to conquer and to kill. Dispatched by King Agamemnon to scout the defenses of the golden city of Troy, he is Helikaon's sworn enemy.

Andromache is a priestess of Thera betrothed against her will to Hektor, prince of Troy. Scornful of tradition, skilled in the arts of war, and passionate in the ways of her order, Andromache vows to love whom she pleases and to live as she desires.

Now fate is about to thrust these three together-and, from the sparks of passionate love and hate, ignite a fire that will engulf the world.

Readers who know the works of David Gemmell expect nothing less than excellence from this author, whose taut prose, driving plots, and full-bodied characters have won him legions of fans the world over. Now, with this first masterly volume in an epic reimagining of the Trojan War, Gemmell has written an ageless drama of brave deeds and fierce battles, of honor and treachery, of love won and lost.

    A Journey to Remember

    Asna Latif

Troy: Lord of the Silver Bow, by David Gemmell is by far one of my most favourite books. It is diverse, unique, intriguing, and completely lively. It takes the old times before anyone can recall, and the mythical Trojan War and turns it into a memorable time that sounds 100% real.
Every character, whether evil or good, sounds so intelligent in it's own way. We can understand what their motives are. They are so well-rounded that when their minds are opened to us, we can understand why they did something so unpredictable, which is a good way to describe what David Gemmell does a lot in the book. Many unpredictable and exciting plot turns. It can get very inappropriate at times, but stays within the time range we're reading about.
David Gemmell keeps you attached to the book, with such a powerful entrancement you will have no choice but to appreciate it.
After the book ends, you'll never forget you read it. Of course, you'll be on the next book by then.

This is by far one of my favorite Gemmell books. Gemmell takes the story of the Trojan war and puts his own twist to it. He had depth to characters that are already well known in popular culture, yet at the same time keeps the books closely linked to facts that we are already aware of about the Trojan war. A create story about action, consequence and fate.

    Absolutely great!

I saw this cool looking cover with TROY written in big red letters....I was in like Flynn! I liked it so much that I went out and bought the following books of the trilogy. Now I'm looking for more of his books because his writing was fantastic, no paragraphs wasted describing the room decor in his books! Action and dialogue all the way through. I read a lot and I hate buying a dud. I don't think I'll be running into that problem with his books. Now if I can just find them all!

I picked up this book on a whim, due to it's title and the neat cover. I've read Gemmell's Rigante series and The Damned books, but this new book is in a class of its own. This historical fiction is the start of a new series - I realized this at the end of the book, and can't wait for the next one now! - and the read was gripping! The genre of historical fiction has been growing and developing and Gemmell writes in a language that is so easy to read, that you forget the words and are left with a battery of emotions. Putting this book down was almost impossible as the heros and heroines come to life in a truly epic way. If you love tales of noble sacrifice, tragic love and justice, then this book is for you!

About the Author

David Gemmell was born in London, England, in the summer of 1948. Expelled from school at sixteen, he became a bouncer, working nightclubs in Soho. Born with a silver tongue, Gemmell rarely needed to bounce customers, relying instead on his gift of gab to talk his way out of trouble. This talent eventually led him to jobs as a freelancer for the London Daily Mail, the Daily Mirror, and the Daily Express. His first novel, Legend, was published in 1984 and has remained in print ever since. He became a full-time writer in 1986. His books consistently top the London Times bestseller list.

From the Critics

Advance praise for Troy: Lord of the Silver Bow

"This is how the oldest tales should be read and known. This is the grand style of storytelling. Gemmell is a master of plot, but his triumph is creating men and women so real that their trials are agony and their triumph is glorious."
-Conn Iggulden, author of the Emperor series

"I can say of David Gemmell, that he''s the only writer of historical fiction or heroic fantasy whose prose I actually study, line by line, trying to decode how he produces the effects that he does. Hail to Lord of the Silver Bow! Bravo, Mr. Gemmell!"
-Steven Pressfield, author of Gates of Fire and The Virtues of War

Praise for David Gemmell

"I love David Gemmell's work. He's one of the best out there today, and one of the reasons that fantasy is alive and well."
-R. A. Salvatore

"Passionate, cleanly written prose, imaginative plots, and, above all, terrific storytelling."
-Time Out London

"Gemmell not only knows how to tell a story, he knows how to tell a story you want to hear. He does high adventure as it ought to be done."
-Greg Keyes

"Clean, swift action and a rich undercurrent of human understanding support Gemmell's characters at each turn of the tale."
