On the Road with Katherine Dunn
Kenneth Mackendrick
Katherine Dunn is a remarkably talented writer. I think this stands as a highly experimental work and reminds me of the equally experimental writing of Gordon Lish. Truck is not only the title of the novel but expresses the force and speed in which the narrative unfolds... and you'll feel this as you read. The book is written without paragraphs and has a stylized grammar and punctuation. You'll notice the short sentences too. I would rate it higher but I found it diffiuclt to read at times since the stylistic force sometimes interferes with the narration, but perhaps this alone should warrant a higher rating. The narrative itself is terrific, "daring realism" and "stunning imagination" (back matter). Dunn's writing is one of the numerous inspirations for Palahniuk's and you'll notice she makes an appearance in his "walking" book. If you enjoyed Jack Kerouac's On the Road, you'll love this, more. I highly recommend TRUCK!
