Junior Booklovers Contest Winner Megan, age 15, Charlottetown, PEI

Seventeen year old Noreen Stall is running away. Running away from her family, her boyfriend and a miserable life. Her past is full of bad memories of her abusive stepfather and hurtful relationships she wants to forget. She soon discovers that won't be possible. She arrives in the small town of Pembina Lake after stealing her boyfriend's car and his money. The town's residents are all intrigued by this new stranger, especially the "meddling for Jesus" Dolores Harper who is determined to help Noreen. Within hours the small town is brought alive by Noreen and her trouble making.

Noreen isn't the only one in Pembina Lake with problems. Many of the town's residents are haunted by lost love, death and loneliness. Somehow Noreen's unusual personality brings these people together as she becomes a part of their tiny town. This book is an easy read and the characters are very well portrayed and real. The author does a good job of illustrating small town life by painting a vivid picture of the setting and the characters. My only criticism was that the book ended too quickly and it seemed like all the problems were suddenly solved just so the story could end easily.
