The Ugly Truck and Dog Contest: and other tales of Northern life

by Cathy Jewison

Borealis Press | December 3, 2008 | Trade Paperback

An isolated mining community like Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, attracts its share of dreamers and schemers. While some are satisfied to search for gold or diamonds, others end up pursuing more unexpected goals. The Ugly Truck and Dog Contest and Other Tales of Northern Life drops you into the quirky world of Canada´s northern frontier and acquaints you with some of its more colourful citizens as they chase these rewards.
You will meet a woman desperate to prove her northern identity by winning the aforementioned contest; a veteran prospector who has maintained his competitive edge in a surprising way; a young lawyer seeking redemption for his indiscretions on the City´s all-sand golf course. They tackle it all with spirit, humour, and the occasional touch of magic.

Canadians from south of the 60th parallel seldom give a thought to life in the North, and when they do, they often rely on stereotypes. Fortunately, Cathy Jewison, who has lived in Yellowknife for more than 20 years, brings to life what it's really like to live "up there". The stories are full of gentle humour aimed at "southerners" (southern Canadians, that is) who go to the North with nothing but business on their minds, but quickly have to adjust to the slower pace and real conditions of northern life. Many of the stories are knee-slappingly funny, spiced with the tall-tale quality also found in the poems of Robert W. Service. But other stories, such as my personal favourite, Old Town Bait and Tackle, also go a little deeper and show psychological depth as well. A very enjoyable collection and an eye-opener for us southerners about the Canadian north.

Sorry, the heading was supposed to read: "Witty stories about northern life".
