I enjoyed this book, and did find it to be charming, but I was expecting more of the laugh out loud type funny, like along the lines of Christopher Moore, and didn't quite get that. Sometimes I felt that the main character was a little over the top and it tried too hard to be funny. It is a nice, light, quick read, definitely great for summer. I'm still debating whether to continue on in the series....

So this is the first in a great series. Wow, what a start. I found it to be a very fast read only because I simply could not put it down. I love this series and this book kicks it all off. Once you get started you wont be able to stop. Its about a woman who has just been let go from a not so great job with a really bad boss, no love life to speak of, and just had a birthday. With that great day behind her.... the night well...... Betsy Taylor’s life as she knows it ends and Queen B is born. Great light book with laugh out loud moments and really well done characters you’ll just fall in love with. MaryJanice Davidson is one of my favorite writers you won’t be sorry if you pick up one of her books.

Undead and Unwed, the first novel in Davidson's hilarious Queen Betsy series, introduces us to Betsy Taylor who happens to be having a bad day. First she's fired from her job as a secretary, and then she's hit by a car and killed. You'd think things couldn't get any worse for her, but they do. The next thing Betsy knows, she's waking up in a coffin in a funeral home wearing her stepmother's ugly shoes. Betsy discovers she's turned into a vampire, and a strange one at that. She doesn't burn in the sun, she can safely enter a church, she doesn't need to feed constantly, and holy water only makes her sneeze. With the help of her friends and super hot vampire Eric Sinclair, Betsy takes on the evil vampire leader Nostro.

This book was a fantastic start to the series. I loved the way Davidson introduced the many character in this novel because she made each introduction seem like a crucial part of the story rather than something she had to do so she could use the character later. Every introduction was funny and interesting which kept the story continuously fun without lapses into dullness.

Betsy, the main character, is a vain, selfish, and totally sarcastic character, but it's impossible not to like her. Yes, she's shallow, but she's also hilarious and there for her friends when they need her most. She's so likeable that the reader will cheer her on in every situation even if she isn't the most perceptive vampire on the planet. The novel is written from Betsy's perspective, the reader understand her thoughts and motivations which often leads to many laughs.

Eric Sinclair, resident hottie of the series, is a delight. He's the perfect contrast for Betsy because he's rather uptight and distinguished. The interactions between Betsy and Sinclair had me in stitches. Sinclair is definitely a worthy addition to the list of hot male vampires in paranormal fiction!

The plot is light and doesn't require much thought, but it's highly entertaining and will leave you wanting to pick up the next novel ASAP. I continued with the second book, Undead and Unemployed right away. The novel isn't long, and it moves quickly, so it could be easily read in one afternoon. I'd highly recommend picking up the first 2 or 3 in the series and starting it on a weekend so you can really get into it!

Great review LEB and I agree, it's a funny, light fluff read for when you need a good laugh (out loud). I love the series.

Yeah, none of these paranormal series are perfect, but they entertaining. I read them as a form of escapism, so as long as they provide me with some distraction and laughs, and are hard to put down, I’m happy. I certainly don’t expect them to be on the top of the literature scale, but sometimes a person needs a book that doesn’t require a lot of thinking, right? Haha. May I ask what you find flawed about this series? I have a feeling I know what it is, but I’m curious.

I just finished this series. I find it flawed, but it's a cute, fast, light hearted read. Glad you liked it!
