STEPHEN KING "RETURNS TO HIS GLORY DAYS OF THE STAND" (New York Daily News) WITH HIS NEW #1 BESTSELLING EPIC

Just down Route 119 in Chester's Mill, Maine, all hell is about to break loose. . . .

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day, a small town is suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and rain down flaming wreckage. A gardener's hand is severed as the dome descends. Cars explode on impact. Families are separated and panic mounts. No one can fathom what the barrier is, where it came from, and when-or if-it will go away. Now a few intrepid citizens, led by an Iraq vet turned short-order cook, face down a ruthless politician dead set on seizing the reins of power under the dome. But their main adversary is the dome itself. Because time isn't just running short. It's running out.

    Daunting

An unexplained and invisible dome crashes down along the city lines of Chester's Mill, effectively cutting it off from the outside world. What happens over the course of the next thousand pages is a truly frightening exploration of human nature without the accountability of society. The description of the carnage and aftereffects of the impenetrable dome are classic King in their shock and awe and he certainly isn't afraid to portray heinous and unlikeable characters. I really enjoyed watching the turmoil unfold in Chester's Mill, which is a good thing because the explanation of the Dome's origins was unoriginal at best, however, I'll forgive Mr. King because he makes the story so much bigger than the finale that the message that emerges about human nature eclipses the weak ending. It is still a frightening expose of human tendencies and the corruptive nature of absolute power.

Although the main plot of the story is the unexplainable dome which covers the town, the most frightening elements stem from the people themselves and how they deal with their sudden isolation. One man in particular, "Big" Jim Rennie is a megalomaniac posing as an empathetic and concerned citizen. In reality, he is more dangerous than the dome itself.
This novel really focuses on the characters, Their struggles become your struggles. All in all, Under the Dome is an intense, hard-to-put-down, chilling read. Stephen finally got his groove back!

A brutal insight into the dark side of human nature. It reminded me of Lord of the Flies. Good characters and suspenseful plot. Would recommend to any Stephen King fans.

I haven't read a Stephen King book in a very long time. This is the first in many years. I enjoyed this book very much. The storyline was very interesting. The book became an obsession for every spare moment that I had. It took me a very long time to read, despite using every free moment that I had, because it is such a LONG book. But well worth it.
Stephen King is an amazing author and always writes a riviting novel!! You won't be disappointed.....read it!

About the Author

Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine, on September 21, 1947. After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in English from the University of Maine at Orono in 1970, he became a teacher. His spare time was spent writing short stories and novels. King's first novel would never have been published if not for his wife. She removed the first few chapters from the garbage after King had thrown them away in frustration. Three months later, he received a $2,500 advance from Doubleday Publishing for the book that went on to sell a modest 13,000 hardcover copies. That book, Carrie, was about a girl with telekinetic powers who is tormented by bullies at school. She uses her power, in turn, to torment and eventually destroy her mean-spirited classmates. When United Artists released the film version in 1976, it was a critical and commercial success. The paperback version of the book, released after the movie, went on to sell more than two-and-a-half million copies. Many of King's other horror novels have been adapted into movies, including The Shining, Firestarter, Pet Semetary, Cujo, Misery, The Stand, and The Tommyknockers. Under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, King has written the books The Running Man, The Regulators, Thinner, The Long Walk, Roadwork, and Rage. King is one of the world's most successful writers, with more than 100 million copies of his works in print. Many of his books have been translated into foreign languages, and he writes new books at a rate of about one per year. In 2003, he received the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.
