Uther

by Jack Whyte

January 2, 2007 | Mass Market Paperbound

A hot-headed young warrior must decide whether to follow the longings of his own heart or rise to the challenge of leading his people. Will he be the greatest king the Cambrians have ever known, or will he fall prey to the darkness in his own soul?

Such are the questions answered in Uther, the story of Uther Pendragon, cousin to the sorcerer Merlyn and father to Arthur, the future King of Britain. In his boyhood, Uther divides his time between two radically different worlds. Within the solid walls of Camulod, he enjoys the luxuries of a civilized community and trains in the Roman military style to realize his heroic dream-commanding Camulod''s cavalry. But still he is pulled back to his father''s people and the dark land of his birth, the harsh, primitive world of the Pendragon of Cambria. At the death of his father, King Uric, a new king must be elected from among the chiefs, and Uther must reconcile himself to the fate that awaits him.

For fans of Jack Whyte''s popular Dream of Eagles series, Uther opens the window to the world beyond Camulod and unravels the mystery behind the legend.

    Great Back Story

This book covers the same ground Jack Whyte's Eagle's Brood did, yet it does not repeat anything unnessecarily. This book can stand alone, but I recommend that it be read directly after the Eagle's Brood to be fully understood. The book starts off good and grabs your attention, lags a bit in the middle because of sheer size, but has an amazing last third which literally left me in tears. A must read for lovers of the Dream of Eagles series.

Jack Whyte really brings out Uther's character and gives excellent reasons for his behaviors. I honestly can say I hated the ending... not because it was poorly written, but because it was just so sad... those who have read it know what I mean, those who haven't, read it! You will absolutely not regret it! Uther is almost an anti-hero. He is a warlord who tries to conquer Cornwall, and in doing so, causes the deaths of many of his best men, and he has a darkness in him that is astounding. Yet, he is the perfect hero. How deliciously ironic.

A compelling piece of literature fit for greatness. Whyte combines unbelievably realistic characters to a beautifully sketched setting. The factual segments add an enriching depth to Whyte's colorful fictional characters and flowery but straight-forward descriptions. I highly recommend this novel to anyone in search of a great read (including 13year-olds like me).

As always, Jack Whyte transports the reader to a time and place both familiar and unfamiliar. Yes, we are familiar with aspects of Roman history, the Celts and Arthurian legend, but to have such a rich tapestry woven for us - with threads of fact, is indeed, a gift. Don't be mistaken by the name of this book or his earlier works and think that you'll be picking up yet another pathetic, romantic story about King Arthur and the like. These books provide a solid and fascinating premise based in historic fact that provides solid foundation blocks for Camelot. Mr Whyte has a strong and clear voice. His books never fail to educate and transport the reader to another world. Yes, I recommend it - I couldn't put it down! And if you have a chance to meet him at a book reading, DO IT!! I did and it was a delight. He's intelligent, witty, gracious and articulate - just as I had imagined.

About the Author

JACK WHYTE is a Scots-born Canadian who has been around long enough by now to have done most of the things he ever wanted to do, and all of those seem to have been connected, in one way or another, to storytelling. His novels have been translated into a number of languages and are now sold worldwide, a fact that Mr. Whyte finds gratifying and astonishing at the same time. Having brought his Arthurian cycle to a close with The Eagle, he is now well-launched upon a trilogy of novels on the rise and fall of the Knights Templar, the first of which, Knights of the Black and White, was launched in August 2006, with the second, Standard of Honour, set for publication in 2007. Jack Whyte lives with his wife, Beverley, in Kelowna, British Columbia.

From the Critics

"Merlyn. Arthur. Camelot. Excalibur. Names that echo through Western culture and strike an archetypal nerve. And whatever that nerve may be, whatever it is in the human condition that the Arthurian legend speaks to, we hunger for it." - Edmonton Journal
