The Vampire Diaries: The Return: Nightfall

by L J SMITH

HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS | June 10, 2011 | Hardcover

The first book in a new trilogy from L. J. Smith!

Elena Gilbert is aliveâ€"again.

When Elena sacrificed herself to save the two vampire brothers who love herâ€"the handsome, brooding Stefan and the sleek and dangerous Damonâ€"she was consigned to a fate beyond death. Until a powerful supernatural force pulled her back.

Now Elena is not just human. She has powers and gifts that were bestowed on her in the afterlife. What's more, her blood pulses with an overwhelming and unique force that makes her irresistible to any vampire.

Stefan wants to find a way to keep Elena safe so that they can make a life together. Damon, however, is driven by an insatiable desire for power, and wants Elena to rule as his princess. When Stefan is lured away from Fell's Church, Damon seizes his chance to convince her that he is the brother she is meant to be with. . . .

But a darkness is infiltrating the town, and Damon, always the hunter, is now the hunted; he becomes the prey of a malevolent creature that can possess him at will, and who desires not just Elena's blood but her death.

    How is this all possible?

    Jessica Etches

Ok so at the end of the last book Elena was perfectly fine, although apparently brought back to life, now she isn't able to talk and floats around? How is this even possible? With no explanation and no heads up this book left me completely confused and felt like I was jumping into the middle of another story line. What happened? This book is completely confusing. The TV show is better and I don't know how much longer I can waste my time reading this series. L.J Smith either need to re-read her series and try again or re-think her writing and communication skills.

It's the nearly twenty years between the last book and this one. I think we're supposed to believe that the talking was only for that first night when the magic was strong. L.J. Smith does not own the series, and has to write to please the publishers. They don't want any sex in the books - pretend it never happened in the first series. They are also completely opposed to a Damon/Elena relationship, which led to L.J. Smith being fired recently. The Return series is very Damon-centric, and much of it takes place in the Underworld, so if that interests you, keep reading. I will warn you, though, Elena's status goes completely out the window again at the end, thus preparing the stage for series 3 - the college years.

I started reading these books because I, like many other people, started watching the show and fell in love with it. That is a good piece of fiction. The original 4 books, aren't great writing, because LJ Smith is not a good writer, but at least the ideas were okay. In this book, the beginning of The Return trilogy, is horrendous. Anything that was slightly good about the first 4 is gone, and I'm not sure LJ Smith was thinking when she wrote this. I can't even begin to describe the things I disliked about this book, it was basically everything. Shinichi and Misao? Elena's wings of forgetfulness? What the heck was going on in this book? Elena at the beginning of the book was one of the most annoying characters I've ever read, much worse than her usual annoyingly obsessive self. Caroline and the other girls' subplot is almost interesting, but that is absolutely it. Skimming it to remind myself of the plot is just making me horrified that there is a book out there this bad. Do not pick this up, under any circumstances.

    wow. Just wow.

This seemed like it was written by a completely different author. While aspects of the book were very interesting such as Elena's pure form... they seemed completely separate from the world already written for this book series. Also we seemed to travel through time since the originals were set in the 80's... I was quite shocked to see text messaging and word documents in this book.

There were endless spelling errors and grammatical errors and huge portions of the book I had to read and re-read. It was strange to have spent all of the other books focusing on general supernatural stuff to suddenly mix it up with Japanese supernatural.

I still dont think I've completely understood it all. As I said it almost seems to have been written but a different person. I was pretty disappointed and confused. I hope the TV show never gets this far...

I could not agree more. The story seems completely different and the author didn't even properly explain how she became this pure form when she was completely normal when she came back. I've stopped reading as I spent more time than I should have on trying to figure them out.

I enjoyed this book and the rest of the series however i actually found typos in the book and it was not that well written. That being said i did enjoy the series and would recommend it to the young adult audience that it was intended for. It's a good easy read.
