A combat-loving adrenaline junkie, Nikolai dispenses his own justice to enemies of the Breed-and his latest quarry is a ruthless assassin. Didn't love the main characters

Veil of Midnight is the 5th book in the Midnight Breed Series.

This book revolves around Niko, the bomb and explosive loving adrenaline junkie member of the Order. Niko is sent to Montreal on a mission to help a reclusive Gen One vampire. While attempting to help him, he meets a cold and heartless Breedmates named Renata with an amazing gift. Renata is also a caregiver of a little girl named Mira who's gifts make her a target.

While assassination attempts are made on the Gen One vampire and Mira goes missing Niko and Renata must work together. Niko realizes really quickly that Renata is not the cold and heartless female she makes herself out to be and he can't get her out of his mind.

This book is a good installment of the series. There are many major plot developments and new characters introduced in this book that advance the series. This book is though my least favorite of the series so far. I don't love Niko or Renata's character in this book. I don't care for them and do not care if they succeed or find love. I understand why they are drawn together but not interested in them. The book plots and secondary characters made this book a must read.

Book five of the Midnight Breed series. Renata has strong psychic powers and is the bodyguard of a breed enemy, but Niko soon realizes that not all is as it seems with her.
A great addition to a great series, and I look forward to the next. 110/1000

When Nikolai is sent to Montreal to find and warn a Gen One vampire about an assassin who might be coming for him, he doesn't have a clue what he is getting himself into. His fairly straightforward mission becomes quickly complicated, and at the centre of it is a cold, hard bodyguard named Renata. She's like nothing Niko has encountered before. Renata is not only skilled and lethal with blades and guns, but she has an incredible psychic ability that will bring a Breed male to his knees, and not in a good way. When a child that Renata cares about is placed in danger, she knows she can't rescue her alone. Niko and Renata know they must work together, but working becomes difficult when they are tempted by passion and desire.

Veil of Midnight is the fifth novel in Lara Adrian's Breed series about a group of vampire warriors known as the Order. This latest installment was bursting with action! There are three areas of focus in this novel: the relationship plot, the continuing inter-novel plot, and a subplot that sets up the next novel in the series. The plot between Niko and Renata was incredibly suspenseful and exciting, but the romance aspect seemed like less of a focus when compared to the previous novels. Don't get me wrong, there is still desire and steamy scenes galore, just maybe 15% less. What is lost in intimacy is gained in a "don't-interrupt-me-until-I'm-done-the-entire-book" frenzy of conflict, combat, and turmoil for the characters. The continuing plot seemed to go off on a bit of a tangent in this book. It didn't really progress that much toward the main goal, but it was very enjoyable because new elements and character were added into the mix making the whole thing more lush and elaborate. The subplot, while very brief, lays the foundation for the next novel in an intriguing manner.

Going into Veil of Midnight, I didn't feel that I knew as much about Niko as I did about some of the other warriors prior to their stories. Niko turned out to be an interesting character, but he's definitely not my favorite of the warriors. Renata on the other hand is a fabulous female character who I adored reading about. She's very tough and strong physically as well as emotionally. Renata actually participates as much, if not more, in the action scenes as Niko. It was easy to cheer her on while reading because a strong female heroine makes for an excellent story. As I mentioned before, the romantic moments took up a little less of the novel than usual, but the steamy scenes weren't lacking in heat. The characters were very compatible in combat and even more so intimately. The heat started building early on, but it ebbed and flowed for quite awhile before it amounted to anything. When it did, it was explosive!

Veil of Midnight had a change of setting from the previous four novels. This one was set in Montreal, which, as a Canadian, excited me. I did have one small complaint regarding this, as did other reviewers. No one spoke any French at any point during the book. I think the novel would have been more convincing and realistic of the Montreal experience with some French going on.

Overall, Veil of Midnight was an exciting continuation of the series and I would highly recommend it!
