Wages of Sin

by Jenna Maclaine

St. Martin's Press | July 29, 2008 | Mass Market Paperbound

Dulcinea Craven descends from a long line of witches, and she has just inherited wild, untrained magical powers that she has no idea how to control. Now a ruthless vampire and an age-old demon are determined to enslave Cin and steal her power for their own. Her only hope is The Righteous, a band of warrior vampires who slay the rogue undead. Among them is Michael, a fierce swordsman who inflames Cin's most primal hungers. Showing her a sensual pleasure beyond anything in the mortal realm, she must choose between the human existence she has always known, and immortality as a vampire-a new life filled with forbidden urges, dark yearning, and unearthly passions…

    Not What I Expected...

So after reading all the reviews I was looking foreward to this book and it sounded interesting and good. This book wasn't really BAD for me, it was just dead boring. There was nothing super unique about the story, except that it's a paranormal written in the Victorian era, which I'm not a huge fan of. But that could have worked if I hadn't felt like I'd read this story a million times already except in a different order...It really did follow the very typical damsel in distress from evil vampire and then she becomes empowered routine. Plus I felt no connection with the characters which is really what draws me into a story. Overall, I wouldn't waste your time.

    Delightful

This book took me by surprise...I really enjoyed it. Dulcinea "Cin" Craven is just coming into her magical powers that have been handed from down from generation to generation. After the death of her parents, she finds herself being hunted by a newly turned vampire (her childhood friend) and a demon for those powers. She enlists the help from a group called The Righteous. Turns out this she demon is very powerful and in order to save herself and those she loves, Cin becomes a vampire. She also finds love with one of the members of The Righteous. What a fun read. Went out and bought the second book in the series and am looking forward to reading it.

    Awesome Series Debut

Another debut novel that rocked my socks off! Jenna Maclaine comes out swinging with this first book in the Cin Craven series, and creates a character that you root for all the way. Cin is strong yet vulnerable, sassy and sweet. Micheal is her perfect match! A grand love arises out of this wonderfully detailed story about life, loss, danger, love, sacrifices, death and magic.

I absolutely loved it and am anticipating the next novel in the series, Grave Sins, due to be released in February 2009. A prequel to Wages Of Sin can be found in the already released anthology, The Mammoth Book Of Vampire Romance. It tells Devlin and Justine's story.

A Great Start For This Series

I really liked this book, it was funny, sexy and suspenseful in all the right places. I love the main character, Cin Craven, she’s witty, smart and still has a lot to learn about being a witch and now also a vampire. Although it was a little slow at times I think this series has a ton of potential.
