Wake

by Lisa McMann

Simon Pulse | December 23, 2008 | Trade Paperback

Not all dreams are sweet.

For seventeen-year-old Janie, getting sucked into other people''s dreams is getting old. Especially the falling dreams, the naked-but-nobody- notices dreams, and the sex-crazed dreams. Janie''s seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime.

She can''t tell anybody about what she does -- they''d never believe her, or worse, they''d think she''s a freak. So Janie lives on the fringe, cursed with an ability she doesn''t want and can''t control.

Then she falls into a gruesome nightmare, one that chills her to the bone. For the first time, Janie is more than a witness to someone else''s twisted psyche. She is a participant....

    Wow this book was really thought out and descriptive! I totally fell in love with the characters and I think their personalities really left a good mark for the overall rating! The plot was amazing and I think that the author (Lisa McMann) did a perfect job at describing the dreams! This book was really really good but I think that the author could have described the settings around the characters a little better. Over all I really loved this book because I finished this in 1 day and usually that's when I really like a book! C;

Quite possibly the worst book written by all of humanity.

Why is it written in 3rd person, present tense? Does the author wish to make her seemingly "young adult" novel sounds like a children's storybook?

The plot fell flat; the characters fell flat; the novel, therefore, also (you guessed it!) fell flat.

Don't waste your money on this book. Trust me.

I really enjoyed this book. At first I wasn't sure if I should continue reading but I quickly got past that. I seriously couldn't stop and now I need to read "Fade" as soon as possible. I recommend this book for all types of readers. It has some romance, a bit of mystery and a bit of action. I really enjoyed it...when you look back not much happens but it just keeps you reading. This book is perfectly paced, but I think the back of the book isn't completely accurate but you'll still be happy in what happens in the book anyways. A Great Read.

I thought this book was so cute. I really like the fact that the charaters lifes aren't all peaches and cream, they have problems. Alough there problems are pretty bad, they still have them. The whole going into dreams so was a totally original spin on things. This book was cute and serious all at the same time. It's definatly recamended.

I had requested this one from my library for my daughter to listen to. When she didn't load it onto her ipod, I decided that I would listen to it instead. Good choice. This story had me caught from the start and didn't let me go.

Since she was young, high school student Janie has been drawn into others dreams. She doesn't want to be there, but she has no choice. It's not something that happens only when she is asleep, but also when she is wide awake. Janie must find some way of dealing with this if she is to lead any sort of normal life.

Caleb seems to be offering her helping hand, but he has enough problems of his own. Everyone knows that he has trouble with the law and Janie definitely doesn't want to be involved with that.

I totally enjoyed this story. At first I didn't understand where these flashbacks of Janie as a young girl were going, but that was cleared up pretty quickly. We learn very little about Janie's mother, other than she drinks, in fact she drinks a lot. I wonder whether her mother also is drawn into other people's dreams and that she uses the alcohol to blot them out. Perhaps I'll learn more in the next book.

This is the first part in a three book series. Fade and Gone and the following titles. I have already requested Fade from my library, again as an audio book.

The audio version that I listened to is unabridged and runs for 4 hours 24 minutes. It was read by Ellen Grafton.

I read the back of this book last year sometime and I must say it wasn't something that grabbed me and I had to read right away. Everytime I did a search for new books to read this one always seemed to pop up, so I decided to give it a go. Well I was pleasantly surprised, I really enjoyed the book and now am looking forward to the second and third. I do wish they were longer though :)

Jamie has been getting sucked into peoples dreams since she was a child, but it's gotten worse the older she gets. Sometimes she can get herself out of the dream, but more often then not she can't & it's effecting her health. She hasn't told anyone what happens to her, not even her bestfriend. One day she falls into a horrible dream, one that terrorizes her…then she finds out who that dream belongs to and makes a friend that she can share her secret with.

I had, had the second novel in the Wake series (Fade) for sometime & finally decided to go ahead with the series, have to make that TBR pile disappear.

While I liked the idea behind the book, I had a few issues with it, the way it's written sometimes is like a teens diary (time & date format) which is fine but sometimes it jumps around a bit too much for a YA. I also had an issue with the ending, it was so abrupt, I mean 210 pages? Thankfully if you pick it up now, you also have Fade & Gone to read right away.

While the plot was good, the idea awesome, Wake fell a bit short of what I expected. It could have been so much more, things could have been explained better & less filler dialogue. The flow, just wasn't there.

It was an okay read, but not something you should rush to get to. Thankfully Fade was a lot better!

The secong book Fade is just as good or even better then the first.
I thought Mcman would try to top her first two books but the third seemes to sink to the bottom.

This book literally got my attention from page one. I couldn't put it down and when I did, I just wanted to pick it up again and resume reading. I finished it in about two days and so far is one of the better books I've read this year. It's the writing style that got my attention. It's in short sentences, yet with splashes of dialogue and moments of dream descriptions in between. The pace is extremely fast in the book but because of the way its' written, you won't be lost in the storyline and everything is easily understandable. The plot is a little haphazard at first, but you do get the general idea and once you do, it steamrolls quickly and you are quickly engrossed and extremely interested as what will happen next. The dreams are well written and the nightmares do sound like something one would dream of. The sexy dreams? well, they're laughable but I'm sure they'd be quite embarrassing if they were known to someone and you didn't even know they were watching.

As to characters, I like both Janie and Cabel. They do seem to compliment each other (although they were on a rocky start). I really do love the way Cabel tries to take care of Janie, even when he doesn't understand what's happening to her at first. I like his loyalty, and admire both his and Janie's strength after what they've been through in their trouble childhood pasts. Especially Janie, as she's living with an alcoholic mother and dealing with her "affliction" at the same time, and also dealing with issues at school (Melinda's a real twit). Other than Janie and Cabel, not much is done with the other characters surrounding them, they are more like secondary ones, so the main focus would be on the two.

A lot of questions have been left at the end of this book. I really wanted to know more about Miss Stubin, it seems she is the key to everything Janie needs to know about her gift. The thing is, it's not really explained in this book and only mentioned in very vague and subtle references. I wish there was more information but perhaps it will be covered in the next two books, as now Janie finds out her gift, can be of great use after all. Nevertheless I will be going for the second book for sure, this one was way too interesting to just let go without knowing what was to happen next!

Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who have a love for YA fiction. There is teenage drama/romance in it, but the paranormal aspect of it dominates. It's very well written, a quick read, but a very entertaining one.

    Why Did I Bother?

    Lauren Barclay

Straight off, this isn't the kind of novel I would usually choose to read. By "this kind of novel", I mean the kind of novel made to sell for teen girls with short attention spans and small vocabularies. I'm sure you're then asking: "Why, Lauren, why would you read this book?"

I asked myself the same thing.

Like all my other visits to a library or bookstore, I rarely have enough time to pre-read the first chapter to get a sense of the author's writing style. This is something I like to do considering the blurb at the back of the book just doesn't cut it. Seeing the "BESTSELLER" brand at the top of the book I thought, "why not? It can't be a bestseller for nothing."
    Lesson learned.
The concept of being pulled into others dreams is fascinating. (Imagine being able to visit the wanderings of someone's mind!) Lisa McMann writing is not.

Wake is written as an on-the-spot narrative diary of the young girl who is the 'dreamwalker,' if you will. The first few entries in this mental diary are the details of her primary experiences entering dreams. McMann wrote the first chapters in extremely choppy writing. I chose to keep reading because I thought this style of writing was used to pull the reader in and add suspense so they would continue to read. I was wrong. McMann actually accomplished (I say accomplished because not any writer is able to continue on like this throughout their whole novel) to write in choppy sentences that were hardly sentences themselves.

Why. Must. McMann. Write. In. Two. Word. Sentences?!
I'm sure that if you read the whole series in a short span of time you might start talking the same way that McMann writes.

Unfortunately for you (fortunately for the author), I was hardly able to concentrate on the plot itself as I was beyond annoyed and sick of her style of writing. If you are able to decipher the plot with McMann's lack of detail, congratulations. I'm sure you would find that not only is McMann dramatically flawed at writing, she also incompetent at imagining a sound, interesting plot line.

When I found out that this book had sequels I nearly had to take a Rapid Release Tylenol.

Honestly, to the readers: for the sake of all that is good in literature, please don't read this book.

Wake was okay.It had a great plot and the summary really did interest me. When I started to read it I kind of got annoyed about how the author (Lisa McMann) wrote the book from a narratives point of view. Also thought that I wasn't gonna have a strong relationship with the characters, since there was only face emotions told. After a while, and alot of concentration I feel in love with the characters and the book!
    GREAT PAGE TURNER!

I was in shoppers one afternoon and I was stumbling through the mini book section they have. I saw "Wake", read the back of the book, and thought it would keep me occupied. The way that Lisa writes Janies dreams keeps you begging for more. I found after the first couple dozens of pages, I was sucked into a book I truly love. I couldn't put it down, and the ending came too soon. Definately a fast paced story, and I give Lisa props for her talent.

At first I was hesitant about reading it. My mom kept on nagging me about it saying how good it was and how I just had to read it and how it was super awesomely fantastic. I was just like yeah, yeah, when I get around to it. Man, am I glad I finally got around to it. I LOVED it! I got sucked into this story and couldn't put it down. Defiantly a must read. I cannot wait for Gone!

    Wake Will Keep You Awake

This review is from: Wake (Hardcover)

Wake is the first book in the series that follows Janie Hannagan's ability to be trapped in people's dreams unwillingly, even when she's awake. Janie's body becomes taken over as she goes blind and deaf to reality and gets sucked into a dreaming mind. She also has spasms and she is fully aware that she is being taken over. The novel is written under dates and their times of what is occurring in the book at that time. However, the book seems to skip a lot and the storyline is a bit chopped up. Janie deals with her problem by learning to avoid people who are about to fall asleep. No one knows about her problem, not even her alcoholic mother or her best friend. Janie is kind to the boy named Cabel, who also comes from a poor home and is considered a freak as well. Throughout the book, Cabel and Janie become better friends and when their class goes on a school trip, Janie is taken over by someone's dream on the bus and Cabel becomes concerned about her intense spasms. Cabel takes care of Janie on the overnight school trip, but he soon finds out that Janie was in his own dream. Janie then decides its time to start to trust someone, so she finally tells Cabel about her ability. Just as Janie and Cabel are becoming romantically involved, Cabel stands Janie up one night and Janie is informed from her best friend that Cabel is dealing drugs and is sleeping with another girl. Janie is heart broken that she was lied to, so she ignored Cabel's pleas to talk to him. Turns out that Cabel has a secret too, and that he needs Janie's help. This novel was pretty good, but I found it a bit repetitive in the fact that she goes into too many dreams throughout the book. Overall, the plot was pretty good, and the novel was full of dramatic romance.

I found Lisa McMann's writing style slightly interesting, but I failed to get a real grasp on the characters. I didn't really feel like I knew them at all, and therefore was not emotionally involved or concerned about how the story turned out for them.

The concept of Janie's dream-walking was decent, especially in the realm of supernatural teen books, which can often be lacking in the originality department.

The things that bothered me the most about Wake, however, were the book's preachiness, and lack of authenticity. The anti-drug message was too present for me, and it really felt like a middle-aged woman talking down to teens about "the right thing to do." It also didn't seem like the author did much research at all into the police procedures that are quite essential to the story. It was hard to suspend my disbelief. But, on the plus side, at least Wake was quick to read.

    Fails Miserably

    LisaR

The premise of a girl getting sucked, unwilling, into people's dreams is a fabulous idea. McMann's execution however fails miserably.

When I picked up Wake I was really excited. I loved the idea of being a dream walker and was eager to see how McMann molded and shaped the world she was creating. Would Janie use her ability for good, how much trouble would it get her into? Was this the story of a girl on the fringe whom finally discovers that her inner freak can be a good thing not a bad one. Within the first paragraph I realized I was horribly wrong.

I knew this was a teen book but it read as younger teen, pre-teen even. The style was very, 'see Janie run... see Janie sit... Janie wakes up...'. It had a younger immature style to it and I wasn't expecting that. Often I find the style of writing in teen/ya has a bit more mature feel to it. This was like reading beginner fanfiction and made my eyes hurt. I'm not sure if McMann was trying to write in a style that would make the reader feel as though they were being 'dropped' in dreams but it failed. It instead felt insanely choppy and incoherent and very, very, very child-esque. I wanted depth and meat to the words rather then just basic description, at best.

Of course some of the content contradicts that. There was language and heavy smooching and sleeping together, all of which is very past teen, in my opinion. This leaves me to assume McMann was trying to create a feel with the choppiness.

The plot itself was random and again...? choppy. I think that's my word of description for this book. I could see plot twists coming from miles away yet evening knowing them it all seemed rushed and didn't have a nice flow to the work.

The only plus of this book was the concept of dream walking and what one could do with that. McMann had such potential for this story but I really feel like she totally botched it. I won't be picking up the rest of this series.

i would rate this book maybe a 3.5 if i could. I have mixed feelings about whether i liked it or not. I mean the plot is unique and i really liked the ideas that came out in this idea (maybe that is cause i am fascinated with dreams who knows) but at the same time there is like no action going on in this book. There is a steady stream of entertainment sure but nothing that kept me turning pages or gripped with anticipation. Plus it is a quick read i read it in an hour and a half and i am not fond of books that are quick reads that have no action. But overall i liked the characters, i liked the idea, i liked how it was written the only downside i had which knocked its rating down is that it is slightly boring. Although i am going to purchase the sequel fade just because of the one sorta twist that happens in the book towards the end. In my opinion if you are not sure whether you want to read this book i would save your own judgment for it and go for it. :)

I thought that the plot was really good, not something that's in a lot of books, and I quickly got into this book. The only problem i had with it was that it ended too fast. I think that the author should have described more things and elaborated more. Other than that it was a really good book.
