The Wealthy Barber Returns: Significantly Older and Marginally Wiser, Dave Chilton Offers His Unique Perspectives on the World of Money

by DAVID CHILTON

Financial Awareness Corporation | August 12, 2011 | Trade Paperback

"I love this book! It's wickedly witty and wonderfully wise - a Canadian icon returns just in time."
Senator Pamela Wallin

"Dave Chilton is the only guy who can effectively teach you the way to financial security using Oscar Wilde, evolution, the pains of horse racing and the price of Nibs. If I can apply even half of what I learned in this very funny book to my life, it will ease my mother's mind, and for that I will be eternally grateful."
George Stroumboulopoulos, CBC Host

"If you've always thought of money as a dry and dusty subject, let Dave show you just how interesting it can be. While you're at it, learn a thing or two about your personal motivation and how to point it in the right direction. And laugh your socks off, too! I thoroughly enjoyed this book!"
Gail Vaz-Oxlade, TV Host of Til Debt Do Us Part and Financial Author

"The Task Force on Financial Literacy can stop dithering. All it has to do is distribute Dave Chilton's long-awaited The Wealthy Barber Returns."
Jonathan Chevreau National Post Columnist and Author of Findependence

"Very funny. Very smart. This fast-paced journey through the world of personal finance will help a lot of people. I loved it!"
Amanda Lang, CBC Senior Business Correspondent

"A simple plan for a better financial future: Read this book. It's down to earth, fun to read and wise to all the mistakes people make in managing money."
Rob Carrick, Personal Finance Columnist, The Globe and Mail

"From the man who encouraged millions of people to save for the future, The Wealthy Barber Returns arrives when Canadians need it most. Another generation will be richer because of Chilton's funny, heartfelt and timely book."
Pat Foran, CTV News

"Dave is the king of common sense and writes in a way that everyone can understand. I love his key points: Financial planning is surprisingly straightforward. Simplicity works. Pay yourself first and get out of your own way. Too much credit can kill you."
Ellen Roseman, Personal Finance Columnist at the Toronto Star and Blogger at Moneyville.ca

"The Wealthy Barber Returns should be on the desk of every politician, chief, parent and teacher in North America. Dave speaks like the great chiefs of the past by reminding us that success is far more than money and material possessions."
Chief Clarence Louie, CEO, Osoyoos Indian Band Development Corp.

"I seldom endorse books but I'm happy to make an exception in this case. The Wealthy Barber Returns is good, practical advice written in a clear, concise and engaging style. If you, like most Canadians, are looking for ways to improve your financial situation, this is the place to start."
Malcolm Hamilton, Partner, Mercer

"Brilliant! I liked it even better than The Wealthy Barber. If we incorporate even a couple of Dave's ideas into our financial lives, we'll be much richer for it and not merely in monetary terms."
Ram Balakrishnan, CanadianCapitalist.com

"Chilton's good, old-fashioned advice and fresh insights will help you spend, save and invest more effectively. His entertaining, punchy style ensures that you will benefit from his seasoned wisdom into both what works and what doesn't."
Talbot Stevens, Financial Author and Speaker

I read the first book in the Wealthy Barber series by Mr. Chilton a while back, and have to say that this one is just as good. The author does a really good job of making something that most people find complicated and boring - financial management and planning - simple and rather entertaining. The author's stories and wittiness makes the subject matter easy to understand, and really helps to take the dullness out of the topic.

I was initially attracted to the first book through a friend of mine who recommended it to me, and I liked it so much that I had to read this one. I'm not an expert in personal financial management and have had some trouble with managing my money in the past, so I definitely appreciate the tidbits and advice provided in Mr. Chilton's books. I found the sequel to be even more informative on things that many people aren't really aware of these days, like tax free savings accounts and mutual savings funds, and was surprised to learn of how much debt Canadians are taking on compared to the rest of the developed world. The books have certainly opened up my eyes as to how I should be spending and saving my money, and I would recommend them to just about anyone who can read! We can all benefit from learning how to better manage our money.

I'm re-reading for the 4th time, wish I had that advice 20 years ago, but it's still not too late.

We're in much better shape because of the practical advice in the book, well on our way to zero debt in 3-4 years- about time!
We got caught in over consumption and Home equity loan of $100K and had no plan to pay it off until we sell our house (in 10-20 years?) Even at 4%, that is $80,000 in interest alone, AFTER TAX too. The book set us straight on HELOCs and how to reduce spending.
    Thanks David!!.
PS.. We've asked our financial adviser to buy a lot of books for her clients!

Mr Chilton makes this book such a fun read for everybody while talking on a level we can all understand. The book is full of stories and examples explaining why we do the things we do and although we may not change some of our habits we now know why and are possibly a little more aware of the consequences. Best book on financial planning since The Wealthy Barber...not sure who wrote that one..lol. Buy it you won't regret it.

Saving 10%, as recommended in the Wealthy Barber was brilliant. It still is. Times have changed. Barber advice is still sound. What has changed is that the market dictating what you can do with that ten per cent has morphed radically over time.
This book has confirmed something for me that I have felt for some time, yet never acted upon - that being average is the best possible outcome when it comes to risk and investments.
I want to be average in the new year, and the years following based on the rationale that David provides.
David's explanation of the investment world reads incredibly soundly based on my experience - I am not in the investment industry, but I, like the vast majority - simply want the best return possible with the most reasonable risk to provide for my future.
I need to take action on this front, and I am 100% confident that I will have no regrets in applying what I learned from the Wealthy Barber Returns. I recommend it highly.

I got this book for Christmas and devoured it in two days. I actually enjoyed it more than its predecessor, The Wealthy Barber. I found "Returns" to be somewhat deeper, beyond the very basics, reflecting Dave's readers' current ages. I can't tell you how many people i know who are making the mistakes criticized in this book, from treating a line of credit like a second mortgage (and forgetting they owe the principal, not just the "low" monthly interest payments!) to being too proud to say something as honest as "I can't afford it." I'll be picking up a few copies to give to friends -- friends who will learn valuable lessons from this book!! Loved it!

    An Important Read

I'm fairly versed in personal financial management, and this book has provided me with great new tidbits as well as reconfirming some of my thoughts on managing money. More importantly the information is wrapped up in anectdotes, stories and humour so that its accessible to all Canadians.

Don't look at this book as a simple rehashing of Dave's advice in The Wealthy Barber Returns. It contains new information that most Canadians are simply not aware of. Differentiating TFSAs from RSPs, the dangers of lines of credit and more. Plus, most Canadians are not aware of how much debt we are taking on as a nation. With the highest debt rates in the developed world, Canadians are on their way to financial problems. It's important to be aware of this.

If you want to take control of your finances and plan for a safe and secure future, read this book.

I'm a personal finance author. (The Friendly Banker) I've never met Dave and I know him only as most other Canadians do, as the author of an iconic masterpiece.

While I love to write, to sit down and actually read a book is a chore for me. Few books do a good enough job at capturing my interest to get me past the first few pages, let alone the first chapter. I`m a lousy reader. Yet, I read this book, cover to cover, in three nights with the television on and the sound muted, a miracle for me. I even missed a good portion of Monday Night Football. Need I say more? Well, I`m going to anyway.

The "The Wealthy Barber Returns" is written in a relaxed, humorous, conversational style that I found very appealing. It begins with some sage advice on the pitfalls of over-borrowing, describing the forces that draw us into debt traps and the basic human weaknesses that drive us to keep up with others in the quest to accumulate things that, in the end, are of little enduring value. I agree that the false sense of security provided by an abundance of available credit forms a dangerous mindset that can lead to disaster, especially when that credit line is represented by a mortgage on the home. For most people the concept of a Home Equity Line of Credit is too much of a temptation, leading to the illusion of short term gain followed by the reality of long term pain. Dave even takes a couple of refreshing swings at the banks for their tendency to want to lend us up to our rooftops. He recounts one story where a woman he sent to the bank to get a very modest secured line of credit was immediately up sold to the max despite her history of debt accumulation. I'm sorry to report that this is not uncommon. I was a consumer lender for 25 years and it was my job to maximize profit within a consumer loan portfolio. I was paid to lend as much as possible at the highest possible rate without causing losses and not to share that philosophy with my customers. My paycheque depended on it.

Once the notion that we must curtail spending in order to have any hope of saving is successfully driven home, Dave very effectively shows us how we can best turn that 10-15% of gross income (or more if we've started late) into a comfortable lifestyle in retirement. He delivers investment advice in a manner that is easy for most anyone to understand and his command of the subject truly inspires confidence.

Throughout this book I was struck by its honesty. Time and time again I was stopped in my tracks by things such as Dave`s description of his own lifestyle as well as his many insights into The Wealthy Barber and some of the experiences that came his way as a result of it. It takes an honest author to take a look at his own work years later and admit to a change of heart about certain things, especially when that work impacted so positively and so significantly on more than two million Canadians.

We live in difficult times. In my view, Dave has always expressed a deep and abiding concern about the financial well being of Canadians and the consequences that could follow if we do not change our habits. Thus, he`s given us another book, just at the right time, that will help us all reflect on the changes we need to make to secure a decent financial future.

Jim Rohn once said that we must all suffer one of two pains; the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. I prefer the former. It's a choice. What's your choice? Whatever it is it should be a conscious one and I`m confident that "The Wealthy Barber Returns" will help you make it.

This book has been making a big difference on my spending! While I still love adding to my shoe closet (though I'm more restrained), the "Diderot effect" the author talks about in The Wealthy Barber Returns has made me think twice about running to buy a matching purse or coat. And these days who can't benefit from every bit of savings?

    Here we go again

I find it completely amusing that guys like this are only getting rich in time like these because they prey on people like who are struggling to make ends meat. They are making millions by selling books like this that will apparently help us to save money. I have read several books like this and although all them are "best sellers" they all have the same information. Since when do we need to buy a book to teach us to budget? It's quite simple people stop spending your hard earned money on stupid books like these! They are not going to teach you things you don't already know! The only reason they are wealthy is because you are buying their books. If I were you, I would just write a book like that and start selling it too. You will be rich in no time!

Have you ever met David Chilton? He is the complete OPPOSITE of what you describe in your comments. He does not write books to become rich. He writes books to help people, and he has helped MANY. If you think anyone can write a book like this, then why don't you try? Personally, I found the book to be extremely informative and well written. And if you truly read the book from cover to cover, you'd know that budgeting is barely mentioned it.

    Jimmy

What a ridiculous review by Anani. The Wealthy Barber Returns speaks out against budgets! Try reading the book before you post critical opinions. Also, the book doesn't make "get rich quick" promises--just the opposite. I loved this book and so have all my friends.

    Brenda Gomes

I agree with Elizabeth. This book definately has its funny bits but there really isn't anything overly original or clever about the content. I have read a lot on this topic too and am not seeing anything unique. It is a fun read but doesn't really come up with new ideas. As for the author's motivation .... and really c'mon he did not sit down to write it just to help people and certainly no publisher decided to forgo profits .... they can talk all the smugness about helping people, but if the first book was a bomb there would be no Weathy Barber Returns.

This book was a real wake-up call about how I should be investing my money. I've never really thought much about how my husband and I are choosing our mutual funds and now the author has given me lots to think about. I was also surprised to learn about the costs we pay so little attention to. His examples make even the tricky stuff really easy to grasp. I've learned so much and laughed a lot! I'm telling all my family and friends about it...you should too!

I don't buy many financial books, mostly because I can never understand them. Picked up this book yesterday and read it from cover to cover. Not only is the advice excellent, I laughed out loud several times. I particularly liked the part about how some people use lines of credit as second incomes. Guilty as charged! I like the casual writing style and simple messages. Many of them really hit home and motivated me to look differently at how I'm saving (or not!) for my future. Would highly recommend.

I just finished reading The Wealthy Barber Returns cover to cover and I thought it was phenomenal. I think that the author put a lot of effort into making sure that all the information was pertinent; "all killer and no filler" is the term that came to mind while reading it. Much like Chilton's first book, The Wealthy Barber, this book makes financial planning fun and easy to understand. I've read quite a few of personal finance books to compare this to and Chilton has gift for combining for humor and insight unlike any other personal financial writer I've seen. This a must read for anyone trying to figure out their personal finances to ensure a sound retirement.

What I really appreciated with this book is that it's such an EASY read and none of it was boring. I read it cover to cover over two evenings.
