What to Eat: An Aisle-by-Aisle Guide to Savvy Food Choices and Good Eating

by Marion Nestle

Farrar, Straus And Giroux | April 19, 2007 | Trade Paperback

Since its publication in hardcover last year, Marion Nestle's "What to Eat "has become the definitive guide to making healthy and informed choices about food. Praised as "radiant with maxims to live by" in "The New York Times Book Review "and "accessible, reliable and comprehensive" in "The Washington Post," "What to Eat "is an indispensable resource, packed with important information and useful advice from the acclaimed nutritionist who "has become to the food industry what . . . Ralph Nader was] to the automobile industry" ("St. Louis Post-Dispatch").
How we choose which foods to eat is growing more complicated by the day, and the straightforward, practical approach of "What to Eat "has been praised as welcome relief. As Nestle takes us through each supermarket section--produce, dairy, meat, fish--she explains the issues, cutting through foodie jargon and complicated nutrition labels, and debunking the misleading health claims made by big food companies. With Nestle as our guide, we are shown how to make wise food choices--and are inspired to eat sensibly and nutritiously.
Now in paperback, "What to Eat "is already a classic--"the perfect guidebook to help navigate through the confusion of which foods are good for us" ("USA Today").

There is absolutely no shortage of information on food, eating, and nutrition - the challenge is wading through it all. Nestle has done a great job of gathering and presenting the information you need with an emphasis on making good choices and enjoying food. It also gives the reader a good understanding of how food marketing and the food industry work. I like this book very much for its clean writing, clear explanations, and casual tone - it makes for enjoyable, and educational, reading. The chapters are organised to mirror the grocery store, taking you through “The Produce Section”, “The Dairy Section”, “The Dairy Substitutes”, “The Meat Section”, “The Center Aisles: Cool and Frozen”, “The Center Aisles: Processed”, “The Beverage Aisles”, and “The Special Sections”.

The mother of all nutrition books

‘What to Eat’ was actually fun to read. Nestle is knowledgeable, well-organized and often witty, and in this book she offers practical advice on how to make informed food choices. The issues are much the same as those raised in ‘Food Politics’, but the discussion isn’t quite as academic. She debunks the hype surrounding food marketing and explains how supermarkets and the food industry work, without suggesting that we should all revert to some faux-agrarian subsistence farming ideal.

Local? Seasonal? Fresh? Frozen? Organic? Naturally raised? Healthy? Value for your dollar? Very few nutrition books cover it all, but Marion Nestle tells you everything you need to know to make sensible food choices . The book covers nutrition, the history of the food, environmental issues and reveals the secrets of the supermarket business.
