What Should I Do with My Life?: The True Story of People Who Answered the Ultimate Question

by Po Bronson

Random House Publishing Group | November 29, 2005 | Mass Market Paperbound

In What Should I Do with My Life? Po Bronson tells the inspirational true stories of people who have found the most meaningful answers to that great question. With humor, empathy, and insight, Bronson writes of remarkable individuals-from young to old, from those just starting out to those in a second career-who have overcome fear and confusion to find a larger truth about their lives and, in doing so, have been transformed by the experience. What Should I Do with My Life? struck a powerful, resonant chord on publication, causing a multitude of people to rethink their vocations and priorities and start on the path to finding their true place in the world. For this edition, Bronson has added nine new profiles, to further reflect the range and diversity of those who broke away from the chorus to learn the sound of their own voice.

I normally don't read this type of book (life experience/advice/make yourself better book), but I decided to give it a try. I like it because the stories not only showing all the successful ones. People can have passion and still clueless about the execution of their dreams. I like the book because it's not trying to tell me what to do with my life or how to achieve my dream and fulfill my passion, instead it's sharing other people's experinces through Mr. Bronson's eyes. It's like having an older person sharing his/her esperiences. It's captivating.

Po presents a very realistic picture of professionals struggling with the "what" question. Po interviewed over 800 people from coast to coast and shared from their stories, what they learned about the experience of wrestling with one of the most important questions in our lives. He shows the good, the bad and the ugly

That this wasn't a book trying to give advice but rather, offered an interesting collection of real people's lives was fantastic. It made me inspect my own life and I gleaned a couple of person to do's out of it. The writing style however, made retention difficult. I found myself constantly rereading pieces to remind myself what the point of that chapter was. If you truly want to get something out of it, I'd sit down with a pen & paper to jot down notes as you go along. This is the first Bronson book I've read, so I'm not familiar with his writing style. If the style in which this book was written was designed to make you reread to reflect, then it's rather clever. Otherwise, just be prepared.

Although I was pumped to read this book, I could not get past the first few chapters. I could not get into it. My husband picked up the book too and after a bit asked me if I liked it. I said no and he said Good, it's just not me . I find Mr. Bronson's writing childish, immature and interferes with the story he is trying to tell. I am an avid reader and really enjoy a good book. This is not one of them.

From the Critics

Although all three of his books have been critically acclaimed bestsellers, author Po Bronson began work on What Should I Do with My Life? because he was asking himself that very question. For answers, he crossed the landscape of America to find people who have struggled to unearth their true calling-people of all ages, classes, and professions who have found fulfillment: those who fought with the seduction of money, intensity, and novelty and overcame their allure; those who broke away from the chorus to learn the sound of their own voice.
