When All You Have Is Hope

by Frank O'dea, John Lawrence Reynolds

Penguin Group Canada | August 5, 2008 | Trade Paperback

For entrepreneur Frank O'Dea, it was a long road from street life to the high life. Born in Montreal to an upper-middle class family, Frank's life took a downturn as a young man when he was sexually assaulted by a priest. He began drinking at an early age and was soon destitute, living in degradation on the streets of Toronto. By way of a sympathetic employer, the Salvation Army, and Alcoholics Anonymous, O'Dea quit drinking and started a small business that developed into the Second Cup coffee chain. Over the years, his philanthropic activities extended to AIDS fundraising, child literacy in the Third World, and landmine removal. His message is simple: HOPE, VISION, ACTION.

    Really Good Read

I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read. I would recommend it to anyone, in fact I already have. Certainly worth the $15 it cost me. Not a book to read if you are looking for a How to Guide to be successful, but I do feel that it is a great example of how to focus your energy into projects that you love. Frank expresses great passion for all of his projects, the successes and failures alike.

Anyone who has given up on themselves and thinks they cannot amount to anything given their circumstances should read this book. It should be a required read in High Schools across Canada.

If you ever think you have no chance at succeeding or that your options are limited, think of Frank living on the streets shivering from the cold and what he has achieved with his life so far. No excuses!

    Inspirational Read

This book was an absolutely moving read. It will make you want to get off the couch and hug your family. For a man to grow up in living conditions like he did and end up being one of the most successful men in Canada is highly inspirational. It teaches you that you can do anything in the world that you set your mind to. You can overcome alcoholism and earn a million dollars if you set your mind to it.
The book also teaches you to get involved and network with anyone. That's how you have to work your way up, you have to use the connections you come across. Without the connections, Frank O'Dea would not be in the position he is in now.
This book was highly inspirational from a business standpoint and a personal standpoint. This is a must read book if you need a little picker up.

    Insiration At Its Finest

When All You Have is Hope, was a great story if you have ever felt screwed over in life or work. O'Dea's story is a reminder of your own power to change, that anything is possible if you truely set your mind to it & if you truely wnat to succed. I really enjoyed this book, it was almost like a wake up call for all of us that take advantage of the wasted time that we spend doing things that aren't productive. if we accomplished more in our lives, instead of spending that time infront a TV playing Wii, we might have more will to succeed, because we have experianced accomplishment, the feeling , the power.
All in all I loved this book and i would suggest this to anyone over the age of 18 to read.

What a remarkable account of someone who got started on the wrong track early and turned his life around completely. Most people never fall as low- nor end up as high as Frank O'Dea. An inspiring read!

Funny to be writing a review even before reading the book (which I DEFINITELY will)...but I expect it to be nothing short of stellar!!
I ran into both his radio and T.V inerviews on CBC within a space of 2days remarkable coincidence!!....couldn't move a muscle till he was done speaking.
One of the most inspiring and compelling Canadian personalities I ever came across!

This beautifully told story is both painful and keenly engrossing. How many of us would be able to reveal the scars of childhood sexual abuse leading to alcoholism, self-loathing and loneliness? The fact that he went on to become not only an immensely successful businessman but also a worker for downtrodden children and people the world over adds to the fascination of the tale. Bravo, Frank for having the courage to speak out. This is a wonderfully written story and a must read.

This book should be read by everyone, certainly by anyone who knows or loves an addicted person. This book helps show that given enough strength of character and a strong support system of friends and/or family, a person can learn to rise above their demons and reclaim their lives. Mr. O'Dea, thank you for opening my eyes and mind, and for the pain you endured to share this remarkable story with us.

It is a wonderful story that is very well written and flows well. The author makes the reader feel at home with the story, not like a distant observer who is have trouble keeping up. In that opening chapter you are right there with him. It is like that all the way through the book. This is truly a great Canadian success story of just an ordinary guy dealing with extraodinary situations. Well worth the read.
