When Only the Love Remains is an extremely moving book of poems that chronicle Emily Stuparyk’s journey through the total spectrum of emotions associated with losing a cherished family member — her beloved rabbit, Poochie. Although the poems in this book are about Poochie, as Emily puts it, “Poochie is every dog, cat, bird, horse, rabbit, ferret, hamster, guinea pig or other animal that you have loved and lost.” Stuparyk, a school teacher from Winnipeg, Manitoba developed a deep passion for rabbits in childhood and this passion is felt throughout the book as she reminisces about the happiest and the saddest times she and her family have spent with their beloved pet. The human-animal bond is a strong force that is not easily broken, and when that force is breached due to the death of a beloved companion animal, the human heart and spirit undergo a tremendous assault. Emily’s collection of poems are a must read for anyone who has suffered the loss of an animal companion.
