When In Rome...: A Novel of Piazzas and Passion

by Gemma Townley

Random House Publishing Group | March 29, 2005 | Mass Market Paperbound

When in Rome, do as Audrey Hepburn would do. Failing that, run off with your ex-boyfriend, carry suspicious packages through customs, and lie to the person who loves you. . . .

Georgie Beauchamp is totally happy and in love with her wonderful, dependable boyfriend, David. So why does she always daydream about running into her gorgeous ex-boyfriend Mike? It can't mean she's still in love with him-especially since the cad dumped her so horribly. As luck would have it, when Georgie's daydream actually comes true, she is dressed in unglamorous sweats and carrying a curtain rod down the street, while Mike is driving an expensive sports car and looking better than Brad Pitt at the Oscars. She longs to have the glamorous life Mike can offer-and starts to think that he might want her back in his arms.

But when he invites her for a weekend in Rome, Georgie is torn. David has always said he'd take her there for the romantic getaway of a lifetime, but his work keeps him totally tied up. So she must choose: David, all comfort and reliability, or Mike, all flirtation and butterfly-stomachs. The decision isn't too hard to make, and faster than she can say Vespa, she's off to Rome with Mike, full of plans to frolic on the Spanish Steps and sip wine in intimate trattorias. But when David shows up unexpectedly, this roman holiday gets a hell of a lot more complicated. . . .

    Hysterical story

This particular novel was a quick read that I enjoyed on a plane heading to our lovely St Barts holiday. I had brought it thinking that it might be a longer read during my 16 days in the sun and it was actually read on a 5 hour plane ride, not a long book by any means but a cute quick chick lit story. It has a few moments were you can relate and will keep you turning the pages to keep you interested. I haven't read many novels by this particular author but might look for another again in the future as it was a good read.

This book was an OK read. It was very predictable and I like the element of suprise in a book. I guess if you can't figure out what's going to happen in the story then you may enjoy this one.

I wasn't really that impressed with this. It seemed to be a wannabe Shopoholic book, but not nearly as good. I found the plot to be pretty predictable and the main character to be not believable (i.e. who's stupid enough to take a bag on a plane with them without even checking what's in it, especially after you just saw the person who's giving it to you deal drugs???) Overall I found the main character coming off pretty vapid and stupid (being an idiot at work didn't help that impression). I wasn't sure why I was supposed to like her except that she was the main character/narrator of the novel. It's never a good thing when you figure out what's going on and you have to watch (or read) while the main character bumbles around cluelessly.

Georgie's story is a masterpiece. Gemma Townley blends the story of the new-boyfriend-jealous-of-the-ex-boyfriend into a whole new world! It's a light read, very entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable.

All women can relate to the main characters quirky insecurities. Very funny and charming. Hooray for the underdog. I laughed throughout the book.
