Who's the Driver Anyway?: Making the Shift to a Collaborative Team Culture

by John Kuypers

Carswell | January 31, 2011 | Hardcover

Imagine implementing culture change without resistance and turmoil!  Who’s The Driver Anyway? offers senior leaders a powerful, simple solution.  If your strategic growth goals require people to change engrained habits, John Kuypers’ proven formula for culture change works beautifully.  The secret is a three-step method called NEAR-FAR CULTURE CHANGE.  It works because managers at all levels collaboratively agree to change how they make decisions.   NEAR and FAR are two opposing "culture zones" of how decisions get made.  They are opposites that cannot co-exist. Your current org culture is therefore primarily one or the other.  NEAR and FAR uses the simple metaphor of a driver-passenger relationship so everyone on the team is clear about who gets to decide and why that needs to change.  The result is a new ability to notice the culture in action, right in the moment. Four new words become a part of daily work life. Who’s The Driver Anyway? gets difficult issues resolved and everyone on the same page.  It makes culture change a strategic decision that gets implemented faster and without the pain!

Who’s The Driver Anyway? is really quite a tool bag – maybe more of a chest of tools – really it’s a full workshop! I didn’t expect that it would be so comprehensive. It makes a strong case for why “command and control” won’t work anymore and why business needs to shift to a culture of collaboration. That message instantly resonates in today’s business world but up until this book there haven’t been any tools to make it happen – or understand why it’s a lot harder than it sounds. The driver/passenger model of collaboration is a breakthrough! It is very intuitive and the overlying concept of Near/Far explains behaviours that we have all seen. All the tools are so easy to remember – Rift/Shift/Lift, the Expectations Pyramid, Time Frame, HURD, WIN, and the dreaded "opposite effect". It sounds like alphabet soup but they are all very simple and easy to use tools that work in harmony to diagnose problems and make the positive change to a culture of high-performance collaboration. Great stuff!

Developing positive relationships within any organization depends on clear and effective communication. Understanding why and how to make it work is nicely articulated in John’s “Who’s The Driver, Anyway?”. It provides a quick way of learning some highly effective fundamentals to reflect on and put into practice.

    A corporate masterpiece

John Kuypers walks his audience through a logical sequence of steps towards accountability, responsibility and productivity, and he accomplishes that through vivid and relevant anecdotes. This is a corporate masterpiece which is equally relevant in any setting where relationships are important. Who’s the Driver Anyway? is both articulate and relevant.

This book is packed with eye-opening insights. I suddenly realized how often conflicts arise because both people think of themselves as the drivers – or conversely, no one wants to take responsibility and nothing moves forward. I highly recommend this book to everyone, whether you work in a corporate environment, participate in a committee, and even if you just want to improve your family dynamics. It has many valuable applications because it’s all about working with people productively. Plus, it’s an easy and fun book to read with many stories to make the ideas come alive. - Lynda Goldman, copywriter and author of “You’re Hired. Now What?”
