Whylah Falls: 10th Anniversary Edition

by George Elliott Clarke

Polestar Book Publishers | January 15, 2000 | Trade Paperback

Whylah Falls is a rare, beautiful, and extraordinary book of poetry-one that is in as much demand 10 years after its publication as it was when first released. Whylah Falls is a mythic community in the heart of Black Nova Scotia populated with larger-than-life characters: lovers young and old, murderers, muses, and musicians. The powerful and sensuous narrative sings with the rhythm of blues and gospel, spinning a complex, absorbing tale of unrequited love, earthy wisdom, devouring corruption, and racial justice.

If you never have heard of George Elliot Clarke, Whylah Falls is a good of an introduction as any. The book is a series of connected poems, based around various characters and in the end a murder. The language is vibrant, electric with imagery at points that makes you go, "Wow!" Don't believe me? Read it and find out. It is one of the books I still cherish from my Literary Landmarks class in University.
