Whylah Falls

by George Elliott Clarke

Goose Lane Editions | October 1, 2001 | Audio Book (Cassette)

The audio edition of George Elliott Clarke''s Whylah Falls retains all the energy and beauty of the original poetic novel. The story surrounds the Clemence family and the village of Whylah Falls, a mythic community in the heart of Black Nova Scotia. The return of the wayward poet X to the village affects the family and the village forever. As X strives to forge a relationship with the community he left behind, he triggers changes that result in betrayal, infidelity and murder. Whylah Falls is one of the best selling poetry books in Canadian history. In 1996, it was produced as a CBC Radio Drama, and it became an acclaimed stage play in 1997. Clarke''s lyrical audio adaptation stars Walter Borden, Troy Adams, Rachel Latrelle, Merlita Williams, Karen Robinson, Dawn McColeman, and Jeremiah Sparkes, and features original music by Joe Sealy.

If you never have heard of George Elliot Clarke, Whylah Falls is a good of an introduction as any. The book is a series of connected poems, based around various characters and in the end a murder. The language is vibrant, electric with imagery at points that makes you go, "Wow!" Don't believe me? Read it and find out. It is one of the books I still cherish from my Literary Landmarks class in University.
