LATE NIGHT RADIO YOU CAN SINK YOUR TEETH INTO

Recovering con artist Ciara Griffin is trying to live the straight life, even if it means finding a (shudder!) real job. She takes an internship at a local radio station, whose late-night time-warp format features 1940s blues, ''60s psychedelia, ''80s goth, and more, all with an uncannily authentic flair. Ciara soon discovers just how the DJs maintain their cred: they''re vampires, stuck forever in the eras in which they were turned.

Ciara''s first instinct, as always, is to cut and run. But communications giant Skywave wants to buy WVMP and turn it into just another hit-playing clone. Without the station -- and the link it provides to their original Life Times -- the vampires would "fade," becoming little more than mindless ghosts of the past. Suddenly a routine corporate takeover is a matter of life and undeath.

To boost ratings and save the lives of her strange new friends, Ciara rebrands the station as "WVMP, the Lifeblood of Rock ''n'' Roll." In the ultimate con, she hides the DJs'' vampire nature in plain sight, disguising the bloody truth as a marketing gimmick. WVMP becomes the hottest thing around -- next to Ciara''s complicated affair with grunge vamp Shane McAllister. But the "gimmick" enrages a posse of ancient and powerful vampires who aren''t so eager to be brought into the light. Soon the stakes are higher -- and the perils graver -- than any con game Ciara''s ever played....

This book was a real disappointment. The book blurb certainly made it sound like it had potential and the reviews on the cover really hyped it up. Of course I should know better than to put any stock in the 'reviews' written by fellow authors. Don't get me started on what a crock that is....

Anyway...According to Kresley Cole (author of Dark Needs at Night Edge) this book is "An addictive page-turner revving with red-hot sex, truly cool vampires and rock'n'roll soul." OMIGOD! What book did she read? It certainly wasn't this one. Page turner? More like a snore-fest. Red hot sex? I must have skipped that page. Truly cool vampires? Only if you think that obsessive compulsive vampires stuck in a time warp that coincides with the decade they were 'made' are cool. I must be a vampire snob or something but I either want my vampires so evil they curl your toes or so sexy and suave that you want to pull back your hair and offer them your neck. Vampires that can be defeated merely by dropping a box of paperclips on the floor? No thanks. To top it off, this book isn't even that well written. Some parts of the book are written in diary form where Smith-Ready merely provides a date and a sentence or two about what happened. To me that's just the writer's way of taking a cop out. She couldn't be bothered to flesh an idea out but she wanted a particular tidbit of information imparted. The title, which is supposed to refer to the long con (as in what a con artist does), is even misleading....instead of Wicked Game, this should have been titled 'Lukewarm Game'. If I was Ciara, I would have taken the cheque and run.

If you are looking for a book that combines the paranormal with a radio station, I would recommend you switch your dial to Carrie Vaughn's Kitty series. It's way better (think FM vs AM).

From the Critics

"Smith-Ready''s musical references are spot-on, as is her take on corporate radio''s creeping hegemony. Add in the irrepressible Ciara, who grew up in a family of grifters, and the results rock." -- Publishers Weekly
