Winter Solstice

by Rosamunde Pilcher

Thomas Dunne Book | August 1, 2000 | Hardcover

In Winter Solstice Rosamunde Pilcher brings her readers into the lives of five very different people....

Elfrida Phipps, once of London''s stage, moved to the English village of Dibton in hopes of making a new life for herself. Gradually she settled into the comfortable familiarity of village life -- shopkeepers knowing her tastes, neighbors calling her by name -- still she finds herself lonely.

Oscar Blundell gave up his life as a musician in order to marry Gloria. They have a beautiful daughter, Francesca, and it is only because of their little girl that Oscar views his sacrificed career as worthwhile.

Carrie returns from Australia at the end of an ill-fated affair with a married man to find her mother and aunt sharing a home and squabbling endlessly. With Christmas approaching, Carrie agrees to look after her aunt''s awkward and quiet teenage daughter, Lucy, so that her mother might enjoy a romantic fling in America.

Sam Howard is trying to pull his life back together after his wife has left him for another. He is without home and without roots, all he has is his job. Business takes him to northern Scotland, where he falls in love with the lush, craggy landscape and set his sights on a house.

It is the strange rippling effects of a tragedy that will bring these five characters together in a large, neglected estate house near the Scottish fishing town of Creagan.

It is in this house, on the shortest day of the year, that the lives of five people will come together and be forever changed. Rosamunde Pilcher''s long-awaited return to the page will warm the hearts of readers both old and new. Winter Solstice is a novel of love, loyalty and rebirth.

    Dear Fellow Book Lovers,
Winter Solstice , by Rosamunde Pilcher, is one of those books that you find yourself savouring every written word because you become so attached to the characters you begin to dread the turn of the last page. Elfrida is quite literally alive in this book, from the moment she picks up Horace at the pound to the moment she watches the wounds on Oscar's heart heal during one moment in time. Wonderful, peaceful, heartwarming book about the simple things in life. It's about family, even though they may not be related to you by blood or marriage; about love, even though you might find it in the oddest places and at the oddest time; and hope, even though the situation may feel quite hopeless. Great story telling, cleverly intertwined lives and descriptive narratives that pillow you on heart-warming carpet ride. I loved it!

A good for the soul book.

Rosamunde Pilcher is a fine artist who uses the English language to paint her pictures.I can visualize the "elderly apple tree" and the "dangling ballerina blossoms of fuchsia". I am able to see and feel the cold and snow that the people in the book have to deal with during the time of the story.
The characters are real people facing real every day life problems. The way they handle those problems can be a lesson to us all because Pilcher has them cope using their own abilities as well as helping each other. This is how most people function, most of the time.It is a good reminder that we can cope with lifes adversities.Adult situations are handled in a mature, accepting manner.
I was sorry when the story was over as I felt a connection to the characters and wanted to know them better.I have recommended the book to others.

I was appalled by the lack of morality of the majority of the characters. Within 7 weeks of losing his wife and daughter, Oscar the middle aged scrounger has shacked up with and proposed to Elfrida - a woman who feels no shame stepping into the shoes of another so quickly. The only really decent characters in this book in my opinion are Lucy, the fourteen year old and Horace the dog.

I did not want to put this book down. The characters are rich and real. Their ups and downs will have you laughing and crying too! This was one story that I did not want to end...I am from Scotland and as a matter of fact bought the book over there. The description of life in Scotland in the winter is only too real and wonderful! I really cared about Lucy and Elfrida, Oscar, Sam and Carrie. I couldn't wait to get home at days end to find out what was happening next. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the drama of rich characters and their relationships and life's journey.
