Witch Fury, the final addition to the Elemental Witches series (as
far as I know, anyway), is an satisfying finish to the series. This
time round, the Duskoff, completely absent from the last book, make
a big comeback. The cabal of evil warlocks has been busy kidnapping
witches. One such witch is Sarafina.
Sarafina has been having a really bad week. First, her boyfriend
dumped her, next her foster mother died. Finally, when she arrives
back home from the funeral, Serafina and her dog Grosset, are
kidnapped by Stefan Faucheaux, the leader of the Duskoff himself
(this scene also has the best line in the whole book - think Wizard
of Oz). Luckily, a team of Coven witches, led by Theo Winters,
storms the compound and rescues all the kidnapped witches including
Sarafina. Unfortunately, at first Theo doesn't believe her story
and thinks she is really a warlock. Later, after her story checks
out, it is learned that there is an Atrika demon Earthside (when
there shouldn't be any) and not only is he working for the Duskoff
he also seems to have developed an unhealthy attachment to
Sarafina. For her own safety (yeah right, it has nothing to do with
the fact that she's a knock out and he's a guy), Theo appoints
himself Sarafina's bodyguard and magic tutor. Together they must
try and figure out what Stefan and the Duskoff are up to and put a
stop to it.
All of the characters from the previous books are back and working
alongside Sarafina and Theo. Bast does a decent job of wrapping
things up for everyone. The storyline is well paced although I
thought the overall plot was just a bit too contrived. How Stefan
manages to control the Atrika demons is just a little too
unbelieveable (and for a paranormal romance that's saying
something) and told more as an afterthought like suddenly Bast
realized she needed to come up with a reason Stefan suddenly has
access to all these demons and was able to control them. As far as
Sarafina and Theo as the main romantic couple in this story goes, I
quite liked them. Both characters are scarred (either physically or
mentally or both) from their past which helps to add dimension to
their characters. Serafina, doesn't let her past get in her way,
while Theo practically wallows in it.
Though newcomers would be better off starting with the previous
novels to better understand the overall plot that Witch Fury
closes, this is one of the better books in the series. As an bonus,
fans will want to check out Bast's website where she has some free
downloads including a story that follows up with Micah after the
events of this book.
