Richard Cypher never thought that helping Kalhan Amnell would transform his life into an extraordinary adventure. Wizards, dragons, magic creatures and epic fights will help him discover the power of the Sword of Truth that he has received from his grandfather. The descriptions are well written and the suspense won't let you close your book! It's a passionnate book and the series continues. Fans of epic, action and adventure stories, this book is for you!

I loved this book, the characters in it make you love it and it doesn't start off slow, it just gets right into it.

    mildly entertaining

It's hard to decide whether to review this book on its own merits or in the context of the rest of the series. This book isn't too bad - the characters and setting are a bit cliche, and Goodkind isn't anything exceptional as a writer, but there are enough twists to keep this book entertaining and the story itself is fairly good. Most fans of Robert Jordan or Christopher Paolini would probably enjoy this book when read as a stand-alone novel.

I wouldn't recommend it for kids, since there are the first hints of Goodkind's seeming obsession with rape and torture later on in the book. I also wouldn't recommend the rest of the series - particularly starting around book 4 when Goodkind tries to turn it into a fantasy equivalent to Atlas Shrugged. He isn't strong enough as either a writer or philosopher to pull it off, resulting in an overly preachy set of novels that seem to be mainly comprised of long-winded speeches interspersed with his supposed heroes doing things like attacking peace protesters, along with graphic descriptions of his bad guys torturing, raping and killing babies (I guess being communists wasn't enough for Goodkind to convince readers that they were the bad guys, at least compared to his heroes).

    Good fantasy with great ending

A solid fantasy with a good premise, this book really heats up in the last quater. The more adult content, and the resolution that leads to far less than a happy ending, raise the level of this book from routine to great.
