World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century (Updated and Expanded)

by Thomas Friedman

Farrar, Straus And Giroux | April 6, 2006 | Hardcover

"The World Is Flat" is Thomas L. Friedman''s account of the great changes taking place in our time, as lightning-swift advances in technology and communications put people all over the globe in touch as never before--creating an explosion of wealth in India and China, and challenging the rest of us to run even faster just to stay in place. This updated and expanded edition features more than a hundred pages of fresh reporting and commentary, drawn from Friedman''s travels around the world and across the American heartland--from anyplace where the flattening of the world is being felt.
In "The World Is Flat," Friedman at once shows "how and why globalization has now shifted into warp drive" (Robert Wright, Slate) and brilliantly demystifies the new flat world for readers, allowing them to make sense of the often bewildering scene unfolding before their eyes. With his inimitable ability to translate complex foreign policy and economic issues, he explains how the flattening of the world happened at the dawn of the twenty-first century; what it means to countries, companies, communities, and individuals; how governments and societies can, and must, adapt; and why terrorists want to stand in the way. More than ever, "The World Is Flat" is an essential update on globalization, its successes and discontents, powerfully illuminated by one of our most respected journalists.

Great layman's book on the globalization and outsourcing phenomena. Book gets too mired in long chapters about technical stuff but peaks at the end when discussing the impact on geopolitics. Takes a while to read (you must be in the right-frame-of-mind) but once finished, you feel like a winner.

Book Review: The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman

Thomas Friedman is a master of words - his book, The World is Flat, is an eye-opener for even those of us that have seen the world change before our very eyes and have been very aware of the major changes that are taking place in even the smallest, and what used to be the most economically backward countries of the world.

The World is Flat talks about the 10 flattening forces of the world as seen through the author's eyes - these are the forces that brought our world from the closed up shell that it used to be, to what it is today, one with a sense of community and collaboration even outside the borders of individual countries. It tells us how countries like India and China are running the race and doing an excellent job of catching up with the First World countries like Europe and America, and might soon leave them behind. It speaks highly of how the Web and the Internet have empowered individuals to speak their mind, to influence opinions and to expose truths. Globalization not only affects countries and companies anymore - it affects each individual. It talks of efficiencies of economy and scale and how they can both be achieved through globalization and utilizing the human resources on the planet. How citizens of the First World needn't fret because their jobs are being outsourced, because it is a more positive phenomenon than negative, but they would do well to keep updating themselves and carving a niche for themselves in the ever more competitive world.

The book, however, is not all positive. In the last couple of chapters it talks about the negative effects of globalization - how while empowering individuals it also empowers the Osama's of this world, how it can hurt the environment.

The World is Flat is a very balanced book - while one can see that Friedman is clearly pro-globalization, he does not hesitate to acknowledge the side effects of such a phenomenon. Reading a book by an author that is so knowledgeable and whose sources are so credible is a great experience. This book, by any standards, is a must-have and must-read.

Seems mostly dated now. Everyone knows about China and it's manufacturing dominance, the outsourcing of all call-centers and programmers to India. The subject matter is important for anyone involved in manufacturing or software development. The writing could use a lot of editing, many sections are repetitive and unnecessary.

I loved this book! At times, it tends to be a slower read in some of the more detailed technology-oriented sections, but in general it moves at a good pace through Friedman's many encounters and philosophies. I feel it gives a good review of the issues surrounding globalization, which is both well organized and well balanced; he doesn't just spout his opinions, but makes a conscious effort to look at both sides of the discussion. All in all, it's an interesting read and you'll walk away a bit more knowledgeable about current events, major business events, and where our world is headed.

From the Jacket

"One mark of a great book is that it makes you see things in a new way, and Mr. Friedman certainly succeeds in that goal," the Nobel laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz wrote in "The New York Times," reviewing "The World Is Flat" in 2005. For this updated and expanded edition, Friedman has seen his own book in a new way, bringing fresh stories and insights to help us understand the flattening of the world. New material includes:
- The reasons why the flattening of the world "will be seen in time as one of those fundamental shifts or inflection points, like Gutenberg''s invention of the printing press, the rise of the nation-state, or the Industrial Revolution"
- An explanation of "uploading" as one of the ten forces that are flattening the world, as blogging, open-source software, pooled knowledge projects like Wikipedia, and podcasting enable individuals to bring their experiences and opinions to the whole world
- A mapping of the New Middle--the places and spaces in the flat world where
middle-class jobs will be found--and portraits of the character types who will find success as New Middlers
-An account of the qualities American parents and teachers need to cultivate in young people so that they will be able to thrive in the flat world
-A call for a government-led "geo-green" strategy to preserve the environment and natural resources
-An account of the "globalization of the local": how the flattening of the world is actually strengthening local and regional identities rather than homogenizing the world

About the Author

Thomas L. Friedman was born in 1953 in Minneapolis, Minn., but distinguished himself as a journalist far away from his home. His reporting on the war in Lebanon won Friedman the George Polk Award, the Pulitzer Prize, and the Livingston Award for Young Journalists. He won a second Pulitzer for his work in Israel. Friedman graduated from Brandeis University and obtained a graduate degree from St. Antony's College. He began his career as a correspondent for United Press International, and later served as bureau chief for the New York Times in Beirut and Jerusalem. He wrote about his experiences as a Jewish-American reporter in the middle east in From Beirut to Jerusalem, which won the National Book Award in 1989. Friedman is also the author of the text for a photo collection called War Torn, and a contributor to the New York Times magazine.
