World of Warcraft: Arthas: Rise of the Lich King

by Christie Golden

Gallery Books | April 21, 2009 | Hardcover

Frostmourne.

It was caught in a hovering, jagged chunk of ice, the runes that ran the length of its blade glowing a cool blue. Below it was a dais of some sort, standing on a large gently raised mound that was covered in a dusting of snow. A soft light, coming from somewhere high above where the cavern was open to daylight, shone down on the runeblade. The icy prison hid some details of the sword''s shape and form, exaggerated others. It was revealed and concealed at the same time, and all the more tempting, like a new lover imperfectly glimpsed through a gauzy curtain. Arthas knew the blade -- it was the selfsame sword he had seen in his dream when he first arrived. The sword that had not killed Invincible, but that had brought him back healed and healthy. He''d thought it a good omen then, but now he knew it was a true sign. This was what he had come to find. This sword would change everything. Arthas stared raptly at it, his hands almost physically aching to grasp it, his fingers to wrap themselves around the hilt, his arms to feel the weapon swinging smoothly in the blow that would end Mal''Ganis, end the torment he had visited upon the people of Lordaeron, end this lust for revenge. Drawn, he stepped forward.

The uncanny elemental spirit drew its icy sword. "Turn away, before it is too late," it intoned.

* * *

His evil is legend. Lord of the undead Scourge, wielder of the runeblade Frostmourne, and enemy of the free peoples of Azeroth. The Lich King is an entity of incalculable power and unparalleled malice -- his icy soul utterly consumed by his plans to destroy all life on the World of Warcraft.

But it was not always so. Long before his soul was fused with that of the orc shaman Ner''zhul, the Lich King was Arthas Menethil, crown prince of Lordaeron and faithful paladin of the Silver Hand.

When a plague of undeath threatened all that he loved, Arthas was driven to pursue an ill-fated quest for a runeblade powerful enough to save his homeland. Yet the object of his search would exact a heavy price from its new master, beginning a horrifying descent into damnation. Arthas''s path would lead him through the arctic northern wastes toward the Frozen Throne, where he would face, at long last, the darkest of destinies.

    This is my *favorite* book.
(Please take into account I may be slightly biased being an avid World of Warcraft player for six years now...)
What can I say? I aim to keep every book I own in the best condition possible. This is my only book that has an almost-ripped spine. I literally take this book with me EVERYWHERE I go since I know I can open it to any page, and be entertained. When I say this? I am completely serious. At first I really did not like Christie Golden's writing style, but man, this book is fantastic and now I adore her! This book has everything in it that I enjoy:
Upon picking up this book, I did not have many expectations for it being it was based off a video game. I picked it up only to learn some more lore before raiding ICC. I must say it has completely taken me off guard that I enjoyed this as much as I did.
The good recounts Prince Arthas Menethil's life from his childhood, all the way up to where WoW begins with the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. It is a very in-depth summary of Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne. I must say, seeing Arthas grow, and all the challenges and decisions he makes, I really felt attached to the character. When he was sad? You were sad. When he was mad? You were mad. Even through some of the 'evil' decisions he made, you still had hope for him from knowing how he had been.
I am trying not to reveal too much, but that is extremely hard since this book has so much stacked into it. The narration is mainly Arthas, but switches to Sylvanas and rarely Jaina as well. All this does is make you feel even more engrossed in the story since you really see the effects of Arthas' impacts on everyone's life.
All in all, trying not to make this review too long (most of it is flattery, anyway) this book has everything in it. Action. Romance. Violence. A whole lot of feelings wound in. It is the perfect book. Seriously, I could not praise this enough, except it may not be your cup of tea if all you're looking for is a vampire/human romance novel...
If you enjoy reading and video games, PICK THIS BOOK UP NOW. SERIOUSLY. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR ORDER IT NOW OR GET IT AT THE LIBRARY. EITHER WAY GET YOUR HANDS ON IT AND READ!

    Pretty good

Relative to all the Warcraft books, this one is pretty good. The first half is great, and right up there with the best in the series. The second half, and in particular the last third I didn't find as good. Most likely because it mirrors the plot of Warcraft 3 pretty well directly.

Having already played that, I knew what was going to happen. If you didn't play the Warcraft 3 campaign, there will be more that's new to you in here and it'll likely be more interesting.

This novelization of Prince Arthas's tale and transformation into the lich king is a solid even if flawed effort. There are plenty of things I think that could have been explored more in depth and it doesn't stray too far from what we already have seen in Warcraft III & WTOL.

Anyways, it was a enjoyable read and while I wouldn't discourage it I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it too highly.

It was good, had its stronger & weaker moments.
    Enjoyable over all.

This book is awsome in every way. Very touching relationship between Arthas and Jaina. I actually wasn't fond of Arthas but when you read this book, you actually become attached. Great lore for the Lore Frenzy fans!
