Wuthering Heights

by Emily Bronte, Helen Small
Editor: Ian Jack

Oxford University Press | November 8, 2009 | Trade Paperback

''I am Heathcliff - he''s always, always in my mind ...'' Discovered on the streets of Liverpool, Heathcliff is rescued by Mr Earnshaw and taken to the remote Yorkshire farmhouse of Wuthering Heights. Earnshaw''s daughter Catherine rapidly forms a passionate attachment to him, but when Catherine''s brother takes over the Heights, Heathcliff is lowered to the position of a barely-tolerated farmhand. When Catherine decides to marry the refined Edgar Linton instead, Heathcliff turns revenger. He determines to degrade not only those who sought to degrade him, but their children after them. Wuthering Heights is one of the most famous love stories in the English language. It is also, as the Introduction to this edition explores, one of the most potent revenge narratives. Its ingenious narrative structure, vivid evocation of landscape, and the extraordinary power of its depiction of love and hatred have given it a unique place in English literature. This edition reproduces the authoritative Clarendon text, with revised and expanded notes and a selection from the poems of Emily Bronte.

I think that this is a masterpiece that will be timeless. The characters are all all very complex and have their own uniqueness. Once you have understood what Heathcliff went through, you can give a little room for sympathy towards him. And Catherine deserves props for her crucial role. An all-around compelling story.overall it's a must read!

Wuthering Heights is a story that may be of difficult context but is an emotional read. The way the author tells the story is so uniquley done, she uses switches of narration that gives readers a deeper perspective of events. Although the story starts a bit slow and may be a tad confusing, I became attatched to the characters and an eagerness to finish the book overcame me. Bronte writes so that the reader may feel the emotion that the characters feel, explaining in detail each stage of emotion they experience. Lastly, yes, the events within the book may seem unrelenting but the writer does a great job at connecting the story's beginning and end, bringing it full circle.

This was a very difficult read. I have read classics before and was aware that the old english would be a little challenging and possibly confusing, however, I didn't expect the lack of interest I had while reading Wuthering Heights, especially since I had high expectations with it being a classic romance novel. I found that the story just couldn't hold my attention, everything was quite slow and took way too long to progress. This made it even harder to read because I kept putting the book down. Also, I found the switching between the first person telling the story and the third person narrative became quite confusing to follow. Don't get me wrong, the plot itself is heartwrenching, romantic, and terribly tragic and makes for a very good story, I just didn't enjoy it.

    Dated and somewhat tedious

I really don't see why this book remains so popular. The over-riding atmosphere is melodramatic, and the pace is labourous. Too much talk, too little plot. I can't give it less than 3 stars stars because it is after all a recognized classic. A woman's book through and through. It's greatest quality is that it is of interest to the student of the history of English literature.
