250 Years Of Progress: Halifax Regional Fire And Emergency Services

by LAWLOR ALLISON

Nimbus Publishing | October 17, 2008 | Hardcover

This is an account of firefighters in the Halifax Regional Municipality from 1754 to 2005. From the very first days of firefighting in the city to the devastating Halifax Explosion, from wooden ladders to today''s sophisticated fire engines, Allison Lawlor details the struggles, triumphs, and bravery of the men and women who have fought fires in the HRM. Lawlor uses stories and anecdotes to illustrate the incredibly important role firefighters play in their communities. The book is divided chronologically; each chapter spans a few decades. The chapters are in turn divided, often by community (i.e., there is a section about the Meagher''s Grant Volunteer Fire Department in one chapter), but also by major fires or special reports concerning firefighting. Lawlor has created a fitting tribute to the courageous and honourable firefighters who have made life safer for citizens in the HRM for centuries.
