Ysabel

by Guy Gavriel Kay

Penguin Group Canada | November 1, 2007 | Mass Market Paperbound

Guy Kay's first contemporary fantasy is a tour de force-and his bestselling novel ever. Fifteen-year-old Ned Marriner accompanies his photographer father to Provence, where he is shooting images for a glossy coffee-table book. As Ned strolls along roads walked by Celtic tribes and Roman legions, he discovers a very old story playing itself out in this modern world of iPods and cell phones. On one holy, haunted night of the ancient year, when the borders between the living and the dead are down and fires are lit upon the hills, Ned, his family, and friends are shockingly drawn into this tale, as dangerous, mythic figures from conflicts of long ago erupt into the present, claiming and changing lives.

    Worth a read

I usually don't read 'fantasy' type books, but for some reason this one caught my eye and I did not regret purchasing it. It was engaging, interesting and kept me up late at night.

Liked it, even though I'm not usually a fantasy fan

3.5 stars. Ysabel is a young adult urban fantasy novel. 15-year old Ned is in France with his father, a photographer. While exploring a cathedral, Ned meets Kate, who is about the same age as he is. Odd things start happening. Without giving too much away, the story involves two men and a woman from 2500 years ago, merging in today's world and somehow Ned and his family are involved.

I liked it. I am not usually a big fan of fantasy, but I've found I tend to prefer ya and urban fantasy. I've only read one other Kay book, which for me, took an incredibly long time for the story to get going. I was happy that this one started off with the action right off the top.

I very much liked this book. Being a fan of Kay's from way back, i was unsure what to expect...and was nicely surprised. Celts and Romans merging the past with the present...characters that were simple yet likeable. Not one of Kay's more intense and involved books...but i think it's the simplicity of the story, wrapped up with history and the geography of Provence, that made it hard to put down.

I really enjoyed this book. This is the second book I read by this author. Very different from the other title, "Tigana" . This book would appeal to anyone from 15 years and up. A great read, fast paced, but I was left a little unsatisfied by the ending. Not completely clear.
