Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Shocking Good Read! Read this book in a few days because it was so good. Simon Winchester recounts the 1906 San Francisco earthquake that led to a better understanding of plate tectonics, Richter scales and the causes / aftermath of one of the 20th centuries greatest disasters. San Fran's tale is told from a small settlement to an overnight bustling city with the advent of the 1849 Gold Rush followed by decline after the big quake in 1906. The City by the Bay may be a beautiful but it also is a place where Mother Nature will get revenge once more as the San Andreas Fault will shake from the friction caused by the Pacific and the North American plates. Great book for lovers of natural science!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Interesting, knowledgeable, fascinating. My third book from Simon Winchester and by far the most enjoyable. He takes you on an epic journey full of well researched little known facts. Although very thorough, detailed and factual, the author keeps things personal with his own adventures and the amazing people he writes about who were there at the time. I heartily recommend "A Crack in the Edge of the World" to anyone with an interest in history, geography, geology, travel, people, our planet, well just about anybody. Be warned Mr. Winchester can write some very long paragraphs. I've also read "The Map that Changed the World" and "Krakatoa". Both are also very well researched and factual but still retain a human element.
