Don’t miss the thrilling sneak peek of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire: Book Six, The Winds of Winter

Dubbed “the American Tolkien” by Time magazine, George R. R. Martin has earned international acclaim for his monumental cycle of epic fantasy. Now the #1 New York Times bestselling author delivers the fifth book in his landmark series—as both familiar faces and surprising new forces vie for a foothold in a fragmented empire.

A DANCE WITH DRAGONS
A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE: BOOK FIVE

In the aftermath of a colossal battle, the future of the Seven Kingdoms hangs in the balance—beset by newly emerging threats from every direction. In the east, Daenerys Targaryen, the last scion of House Targaryen, rules with her three dragons as queen of a city built on dust and death. But Daenerys has thousands of enemies, and many have set out to find her. As they gather, one young man embarks upon his own quest for the queen, with an entirely different goal in mind.

Fleeing from Westeros with a price on his head, Tyrion Lannister, too, is making his way to Daenerys. But his newest allies in this quest are not the rag-tag band they seem, and at their heart lies one who could undo Daenerys’s claim to Westeros forever.

Meanwhile, to the north lies the mammoth Wall of ice and stone—a structure only as strong as those guarding it. There, Jon Snow, 998th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, will face his greatest challenge. For he has powerful foes not only within the Watch but also beyond, in the land of the creatures of ice.

From all corners, bitter conflicts reignite, intimate betrayals are perpetrated, and a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and skinchangers, nobles and slaves, will face seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Some will fail, others will grow in the strength of darkness. But in a time of rising restlessness, the tides of destiny and politics will lead inevitably to the greatest dance of all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good book I really enjoyed this book. I read it in a few days.
Date published: 2014-11-04
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Too Much In One Book I really liked the first four books. They were short enough and interesting enough to keep things moving along even with all the characters being followed. A Dance With Dragons is more like a Slog Through Realms of Detail. I can understand that there's a lot going on and that GRRM tried to keep events as current as possible by switching between the characters so much. He had to match up events with book four and that was fine. He finally joins all the timelines in the last chapters but by then the book had already gone on for too long. Also, he's now getting too many characters in play. Yes it's supposed to be a sweeping panorama so it has a lot of characters but it's harder to keep the momentum going for such a large cast. I'm still interested enough to want to read the next book but not so interested that I'm going to rush out and buy it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Difficult to get through This book is really difficult to get through. It is slow, and tedious. I have had to put the book down several times because I was so bored. There is lots of Dany in the book, but her chapters are boring because its more about the politics of Meereen than anything else. The goings on at the Wall are more interesting at least. So brace yourself, its long and dry, but the wait for Winds of Winder will be much longer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Surprising End! The world George R.R. Martin creates in this series is awesome, but it is very slow developing. The attention to detail is nice, but I always crave more development and excitement. The parts that do deliver that are pretty awesome though! Bran's journey is probably the best. Tyrion, Daenarys, Jon and Arya have some pretty cool parts, but all in all are underwhelming and disappointing. I'm not a huge fan of where GRRM seems to be leading them, so hopefully he rectifies that in the next book. Quentyns role was important, but all the same underwhelming and disappointing. It seems to be a pattern this book, that the build up for some characters don't lead anywhere really. I get that GRRM wants to simulate realism, but he seems to be losing his touch of making that have impact and be interesting. The thing that keeps me reading is the detail, but most of the stories are not really going anywhere fast, and it's quite disappointing. Also those that are going places don't seem to be going anywhere good, so if something good were to happen, it's seemingly going to be in a way that will just irritate than awe. Despite all this, it was quite an enjoyable book. It is so voluminous that I can both nitpick and praise lots, but I hold this series in high regard, as I do GRRM, and I have hope for the future. It's just I can see it being much more than it is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Innovative and interesting Despite continuing his literary style, George R.R. Martin brought in many new themes and characters while at the same time reminding us that the end of the series is coming. One of the best books of the series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great book in the collection. This book is as great as the first four in the collection - great read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING! Such an amazing book filled with amazing details into everything going on in the 7 kingdoms! I would recommend this book to anybody that is really into books with lots of details and many amazing stories going on all at once! The level of detail that RR Martin puts into each character is astonishing every time I read one of his books. Nothing but good things can be said about this book, and the only word to describe it is EPIC.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Dance with Dragons I was very disappointed that they kept pushing back the release date of the paperback edition, I have the other 4 books in paperback and wanted to keep the set the same.  The book finally arrive last month and I have now read it only to find that it is not the final chapter in the series.  There is a book 6 - Winds of Winter.  How many years will we have to wait for that one?  I also didn't enjoy A Dance With Dragons as much as the other four, probably because so much time had past between books making it hard to remember what had gone on before or maybe because nothing was resolved in it.  Who knows?  Will I read the next book?  Who knows?

Date published: 2013-03-08
Rated out of 5 by from Now scheduled for released in October 2013? Really, how hard can it be to format a book for a paperback edition, given that the hardcover was released in hardcover nearly two years ago? The normal industry turnaround from hardcover edition to paperback is about six months, not 27 months!!!
Date published: 2013-03-06
Rated out of 5 by from Sure would have been nice to have been able to buy this paperback before march break, but no, Random House are a bunch of money grubbing slugs.

Rated out of 5 by from Just finished the hardcover - I love the series, but was disappointed with the last book. Maybe someone can explain to me what happened? Too many unresolved issues.

Rated out of 5 by from that su%ˆs. I would have bought in Canada for I live here, but just the paperback version, not the overpriced "hardcover". Well, I am going to buy it in my homecountry now (5,60 Euro) and get it shipped to me, as it already has been released in paperback, just not in Canada. Sorry guys, was really disappointed about that. And yes, don't buy it as hardcover! Just go to other bookstores that sell internationally.

About the Book

The saga that is the basis for the hit HBO] Original Series "Game of Thrones" continues in Book Five, as both familiar faces and surprising new forces vie for a foothold in a fragmented empire. Available in a tall Premium Edition.

Read from the Book

Tyrion He drank his way across the narrow sea. The ship was small and his cabin smaller, and the captain would not allow him abovedecks. The rocking of the deck beneath his feet made his stomach heave, and the wretched food they served him tasted even worse when retched back up. Besides, why did he need salt beef, hard cheese, and bread crawling with worms when he had wine to nourish him? It was red and sour, very strong. He sometimes heaved the wine up too, but there was always more. "The world is full of wine," he muttered in the dankness of his cabin. His father had never had any use for drunkards, but what did that matter? His father was dead. He ought to know; he''d killed him. A bolt in the belly, my lord, and all for you. If only I was better with a crossbow, I would have put it through that cock you made me with, you bloody bastard. Below decks there was neither night nor day. Tyrion marked time by the comings and goings of the cabin boy who brought the meals he did not eat. The boy always brought a brush and bucket too, to clean up. "Is this Dornish wine?" Tyrion asked him once, as he pulled a stopper from a skin. "It reminds me of a certain snake I knew. A droll fellow, till a mountain fell on him." The cabin boy did not answer. He was an ugly boy, though admittedly more comely than a certain dwarf with half a nose and a scar from eye to chin. "Have I offended you?" Tyrion asked the sullen, silent boy, as he was scrubbing. &qu
