A Suitable Boy

by Vikram Seth

Harper Perennial | October 31, 2005 | Trade Paperback

A Suitable Boy is rated 5 out of 5 by 1.
Vikram Seth''s novel is, at its core, a love story: Lata and her mother, Mrs. Rupa Mehra, are both trying to find -- through love or through exacting maternal appraisal -- a suitable boy for Lata to marry. Set in the early 1950s, in an India newly independent and struggling through a time of crisis, "A Suitable Boy" takes us into the richly imagined world of four large extended families and spins a compulsively readable tale of their lives and loves. A sweeping panoramic portrait of a complex, multiethnic society in flux, "A Suitable Boy" remains the story of ordinary people caught up in a web of love and ambition, humor and sadness, prejudice and reconciliation, the most delicate social etiquette and the most appalling violence.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my favourite books I love this book. Every time I recommend it to someone, the first I hear is, "oh, but it so long!" Well yes, it's a very long book, but I thoroughly enjoy the interweaving of the plots and characters, how it balances smaller personal stories with larger ones related to India's political and social environment. Every time the narrative would shift to focus on a different character or storyline, I would feel disappointment as I wanted to know what happened next to the current characters and the current storyline. A few pages later, however, I would feel myself drawn back into the story again. It is a wonderful read.
