Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Malinda Lo Has Finally Pleased Me! I was so disappointed with Malinda Lo's previous novels, Huntress and Ash. They were horrible, but when I received a ebook (ARC? but it's been out for already 2 years) from Netgalley, I was like "Sure, why not read this?" Plus, the rebellious and captivating summary immediately snuck me in. I am proud to announce that Adaptation was absolutely awesome and thrilling. It's the best science-fiction book I've read in a while, with you know, the occasional little tweak here and there. The first 10% of the book was when the main thing happened. It happened so fast, and I never expected it to "end" like that, I mean, the beginning to the present tense stage of the book. Renee really showed her true kick-ass side in the little point of time, I was truly impressed already. I never expected there to be a lesbian romance, but this has occurred in Malinda Lo's previous novels, and it's not a bad thing, it's a great change. Who would expect this concept to do with aliens? The whole book itself was so theoretical and so deeply staged through science fiction and conspiracy theories. It just made me want to go and search up some interesting theories about Area 51 and such. I'm not a big fan of aliens. I've never strongly believed in them, but I realized that books written about the subject usually end up great. This was just another of those amazing alien books. I would never want to watch a film about aliens, but when you mention books, I'm into the world of theories and UFOs. This really reminded me of James Patterson's hit movie, Avatar. It once was my favourite movie, and so many points of this book just reminded me of that one, except, the world is all the same and it's in present tense, 2014, which is really hard to believe because I do not want June 19, 2014 to come any closer, it's kind of creepy reading a book that takes place in the year you're currently living in... or it's just paranoid me. :l The characters were absolutely fantastic. Reese was so kick-ass and confident and I just wanted to high-five her during so many points in this book. Amber and her made the perfect couple. <3 they="" were="" both="" willing="" to="" fight="" for="" what="" they="" believed="" in,="" and="" for="" once="" in="" a="" blue="" moon,="" they="" weren't="" total="" opposites,="" in="" personalities="" i="" mean.="" david="" was="" just="" the="" poor="" guy.="" i="" felt="" so="" bad="" for="" him,="" i="" would've="" also="" loved="" for="" him="" and="" reese="" to="" be="" together,="" but="" you="" know...="" feelings.="" julian="" was="" just="" an="" adorable="" side="" character="" who="" i="" just="" wanted="" to="" hug="" because="" he="" was="" so="" loveable,="" if="" you="" know="" what="" i="" mean.="" :))="" the="" only="" tiny="" flaw="" in="" this="" book="" was="" the="" middle="" towards="" the="" end.="" something="" bigger="" should've="" happened="" then,="" because="" i="" felt="" like="" i="" was="" getting="" bored="" with="" the="" book,="" but="" of="" course,="" i="" would="" never="" leave="" adaptation.="" it="" was="" just="" too="" good="" to="" be="" left="" behind.="" malinda="" lo="" has="" finally="" fascinated="" me="" with="" this="" fantastic="" novel.="" be="" aware="" that="" a="" review="" of="" the="" sequel="" will="" be="" coming="" soon="" because="" i="" just="" can't="" wait.="">

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Legitimately Awesome I absolutely loved this book. Adaptation is definitely a great science fiction read. Even if you don't like science fiction, like me, I have no doubt in my mind that you won't love this book. Adaptation is basiclly what the summary on this website tells you. As amazing as the plot sounds, its excuted even better! Adaptation is seriously great. Malinda Lo did a fantastic job of connecting readers with Reese, and secondary characters aswell. I loved the whole plot and, despite it being pretty simple, the writing was still amazing. I think that if it were too dinamic and bold, it might've taken away from the story. The romance throughout this book really kept it moving. Adaptation is full of suprises, both good and bad, and you can't help but think about this book long after you finish it. It raises questions and makes you think about the relation between this book and the real world. This could be happening right now; the government hides things all the time. The thinking involved and the realistic elements was te icing on the cake. Although I absolutely loved the ending, I'm so mad at Malinda Lo for making us wait so long until the sequel is realesed, and I am very excited to see where she goes with this. I encourage everyone, whether you enjoy science fiction or not, to go out and give this book a chance. Believe me, you won't be dissipointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for science fiction fans and X-Files lovers I really hope my review of this book does it justice. Because I want everyone to go out, find a copy of this book, reserve a day or two and just dive in. I mean it. Everyone. I absolutely loved this book. Malinda Lo is an incredible story teller. I read Ash earlier this year for my YA Pride month, and was totally swept off my feet by her way with words. Initially I wasn't sure how this would translate to the science fiction genre with Adaptation and though the words were not as lyrical as they were with Ash they were still awfully compelling and I was hooked on this story before I knew it. Seriously, I dare you to read to page 52 of this book and then try to put it down. It grabs you and demands your attention. And you'll want to give in, because it only gets more exciting from here on out. Adaptation has an amazing premise, and the plot is unravelled carefully and deliberately, but not to slowly. Trust me, you will not get bored while reading this book. You'll need to keep turning those pages to find out where it is all going. There are also some really excellent twists and turns throughout the entire story. You may have your suspicions about what will happen in the end, but you will be plenty surprised as well. It almost feels like an extended episode of the X-Files. No matter how "out there" some of the ideas may be, you'll eat them right up and beg for more. Well researched, well plotted, suspenseful and exciting. It was the perfect mix for a science fiction read. Or any read, for that matter. If brilliant story telling wasn't enough, Malinda Lo has a permanent place on my favourite author list, because her writing is just so inclusive. Not only is there a bisexual character in this novel (IMHO one of the most under-represented groups in YA literature) there are other gay characters, people of colour, there's even a female president! And it never feels forced or deliberate. It just feels natural, an accurate representation of what the world actually looks like. Final recommendation: An edge of your seat, nail biting read, that will keep you hanging on to every word. Recommended for science fiction lovers, X-Files fans and those looking for GLBTQ inclusive literature. This and other reviews at Hooked on Books (http://christashookedonbooks.blogspot.com)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing!!! I'm just going to start off with a bit of gushing. I completely LOVED Adaptation!! I couldn't put it down and just developed this connection with Reese, the protagonist. My feelings mirrored hers and I just wanted the best for her. I hadn't read anything by Malinda Lo before, but I will definitely be checking out her other works. There was just something about the style of her writing that grabbed my attention and wouldn't let me think of anything else until I finished the novel. I even had a dream about it. Here I am finished and am just itching for the next book! Unfortunately for me, it's going to be a long wait! Also, I just want to say that I really love the cover, it's so pretty and creepy at the same time. Adaptation follows Reese while she struggles to try and figure out what happened to her and David after the accident that they can't talk to anyone about. They've been sworn to secrecy but weird things are happening to them. What exactly is going on, they don't know, but they are determined to find out. Then she meets Amber and things get complicated, there is just something about her that attracts Reese. Then they realize that they are being followed and there are bugs in their homes. They have to figure this out before they are silenced forever. This was a fairly refreshing read for me, it's been awhile since I've read a sci fi about actual aliens. Malinda Lo uses the widely known conspiracies of Area 51 to her advantage and weaves a tale that will cause you to ask questions. Who knows, maybe something like this has really happened, without the world knowing about it. It will make you think about it! So what do you think? Is it possible that there are aliens out there? Have they already visited us without us knowing? I have to say that I personally believe that there is other life out there, whether or not they've visited us, I couldn't say. Whether you're a believer or not, you should give Adaptation a try, it's a compelling read that is impossible to set down!

Editorial Reviews

"Lo invokes a paranoid X-Files sensibility here, layering conspiracy atop conspiracy and balancing ambitious twists with nuanced relationships that are ultimately as important to the sci-fi plotting as they are to the character development."
