Avalon is rated 4.1667 out of 5 by 6.

Of the various star systems that make up the Confederation, most lie thousands of light-years from First Earth-and out here, no one is free. The agencies that govern the Confederation are as corrupt as the crime bosses who patrol it, and power is held by anyone with enough greed and ruthlessness to claim it. That power is derived from one thing: metatech, the devices that allow people to travel great distances faster than the speed of light.

Jeth Seagrave and his crew of teenage mercenaries have survived in this world by stealing unsecured metatech, and they''re damn good at it. Jeth doesn''t care about the politics or the law; all he cares about is earning enough money to buy back his parents'' ship, Avalon, from his crime-boss employer and getting himself and his sister, Lizzie, the heck out of Dodge. But when Jeth finds himself in possession of information that both the crime bosses and the government are willing to kill for, he is going to have to ask himself how far he''ll go to get the freedom he''s wanted for so long.

Reviews

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not what I thought it would be The beginning was exciting. All the mystery and intrigue of a group of teenage mercenaries and their mission in space? YES sign me up. But after the beginning ended, I was sorely disappointed. It's slow and it dragged on and on. I have no patience for slow plot lines and I need something to hang on to or I will definitely lose interest. This was the case for Avalon. The writing is decent, and the characters aren't fully developed as I hoped it would be. I just didn't really care about them as much. There were all characters that I've heard of before. But in a way, I was just so bored with the chapters. Sometimes that's just what happens and it happened to me when reading this. Finally, the end picked up the story-line and I was pleasantly awarded with the ending. The villain in this book kept me from DNFing it. I love when villains are super evil and they prose a huge hurdle for our main cast of characters. I did like the fact it was set in space, but the execution I felt needed to include more. It's not a bad start to the series, but I don't know if I will continue with it, only because I didn't connect with any of the characters and that's hard to get into when you're reading a series of books. Overall, I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for space adventure because there's plenty of that in Mindee's writing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Got me hooked A science-fiction adventure about a group of teen mercenaries, led by Jeth Seagrave. All Jeth wants to do is keep his crew safe and earn enough money to buy back his parents’ ship, Avalon. One mission leads Jeth to information that his crime lord boss and the government would be extremely interested in, interested enough to kill, and Jeth has to decide exactly how far he wants to go to get his ship and freedom. I really enjoyed Mindee Arnett’s The Nightmare Affair so reading this book that combined her writing and space was an easy decision. This book gave me the same feeling I would get while watching shows like Firefly, Andromeda, or Space Cases and I loved it. There’s just something about a talented misfit crew in space that draws me in and Jeth’s crew was easy to like. The plot was exciting and really made me wish I had waited to start reading when I had time to read all night, because I wanted to so badly. Instead I was responsible but was still picking it back up on my lunch break and the second I could when I was home. Jeth’s crew, as mentioned, were all easy to like, though I would have liked to see a little more background on them. Jeth definitely ranks high on my favorite characters of the year: determined, protective, loyal to those he cares about, he had flaws and he made mistakes, he was a great leader for his crew. The tension in high in this book and I loved it. The world and technology created was both interesting and terrifying. The power a villain like Hammer had, that’s something that will stay with me. I loved that very little was black or white. This book comes out in January and will likely be re-read it January, this time when I can read it all in one sitting then have a marathon of my favorite sci-fi episodes. *I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Fascinating YA Scify Adventure! "Avalon" is a fast-paced, science fiction novel by Mindee Arnett that's geared to adventure with a small dose of romance. It begins when Jethro Seagrave and his teenage band of thieves are sent on a mission to retrieve a space ship lost in the Belgrave Quadrant, a region of space that's claimed to be haunted. Hummer Dafoe, the Governor of the Peltraz Spaceport and a notorious crime boss has ordered Jeth not to board the salvaged ship, but to bring it straight back. In return he'll not only generously reward the crew but will give Jeth ownership of the Avalon, his parents exploratory vessel. But what Jeth and his band don't expect is to find survivors on the missing ship, and to uncover a plot that would place metatech technology in the hands of criminals. Mindee Arnett writes with panache creating a plot that's imaginative, exciting and captivating from the first page to the last, With clever skilfulness she creates a setting where a Confederation of Planets thousands of light years from First Earth are governed by the Interstellar Transport Authority (ITA) a corrupt authority who's power is derived from their control of metatech technology that allows space travel at the speed of light. Just as ruthless and greedy are the crime bosses who continually find ways to challenge the ITA, seeking a share of their dominance and control.  In a story that's not only gritty and tough at times, but filled with twists and turns as events unfold, are well-developed characters that lend energy, and emotional intensity with all their strengths and weaknesses. Jethro (Jeth) Seagrave, the leader of the Malleus Shades is stubborn, calculating, smart and resourceful. Underneath his cocky, overconfidence he masks a kind, good-natured personality and a deep devotion to his family and friends, even for one who once betrayed his trust. Elizabeth Marie (Lizzie) Seagrave, Jethro's sister, a highly intelligent computer hacker is tender-hearted and trusting, bonded by loyalty to the rest of the team; their apathetic uncle Milton, a broken man plagued by drinking and gambling; the smart and adaptable Celeste; the brave but brusque explosives expert Will Shady and Flynn Emerson an agile and sarcastic mechanic. But of all Mindee Arnett's characterizations, she breathes life into the Avalon, a fast, predatory and fierce space ship which everyone wants to claim, but which owns Jethro's heart and allegiance. Even the antagonists in the story are notable with all their heartless cruelty like Hummer Dafoe, the twisted, rapacious and manipulative crime lord, Sergei Castile an abusive bully, and Marcus Benford, the cruel and perverse Echo Operative. Although the plot includes an element of romance between Jethro and a feisty, hard-headed and untrusting ITA agent, the narrative stays true to the theme of uncovering the mystery of the Aether Project and its implications.  This YA science fiction novel will keep the reader riveted with its fascinating plot and realistic characters. It's a must read which I highly recommend

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interesting At the start, I wasn't that impressed, because there was no depth to the plotline, but as the book went on, it got more and more complex, and the climaxes had bigger impacts on the story. About half way through, I couldnt put it down. I would recommend this book to any sci fi fans, or anyone who is fascinated by space or technology

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Review from Swept Away By Books This book was a HUGE surprise for me! I was not expecting the incredible action, the heart felt characters and crew that I fell in love with, nor was I prepared for the creep factor some of this book has. Jeth is an eighteen year old guy who is part of a team of thieves for an overlord who you cannot trust a lick. Jeth was the kind of male protagonist who I fell madly in love with. He was a leader, strong but incredibly caring, determined and trustworthy and totally swoony. The rest of his crew were his family and the bond they had between them was fantastic. Every secondary character in this book was so well fleshed out and integral to the way the story flowed. The science fiction aspect of the book was brilliantly done too. I was not expecting something so well thought out, with the technology actually making sense and being interesting! There is something so deeply creepy about space sometimes, and Arnett embodied it to the fullest. There is an area of space called the Belgrave, where Jeth and his crew are sent to recover something. The Belgrave is almost like this Bermuda Triangle in apce where creepy things happen, ships disappear and people die. And when the Avalon was in there, I was beyond creeped out by the crazy stuff that happens. The one thing I absolutely loved about Avalon was the twists. Arnett kept me on my toes, not knowing what to expect, who was going to betray who and what was going to happen next. She pulled it off so flawlessly, while keeping the story action packed and a total blast to read, that Avalon needs to be read by any hard core Sci/Fi fan or anyone even wanting to be introduced to the genre!
