Seeker''s latest prey is a Merlin. Named after the legendary wizard of Camelot, Merlins are not simply those who wield magic, they are magic. Now, with rival mages also vying for the favor of this being of limitless magic to tip the balance of power, Seeker must persuade the Merlin to join her cause-or else risk losing something even more precious to her than the fate of humankind.

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful escape into the world of Fae I bought this book several years ago on a whim, and it has been sitting on my shelf since then. In the meantime, I read another (more recent book) by the same author. I loved the style of the writing, but the book left too many unanswered questions for me to have loved it. Thankfully, in this book, Bear seems to have a stronger balance of mystique and coherence. I enjoyed this book a lot, especially the first half, which was amazing. The style of prose feels almost luxurious, adding texture and color to the world of the story. It is a rare thing for the prose itself to successfully capture the magic of the world, but here is works beautifully. The characters are just fun to be with, even though (especially though) they are all scheming against each other constantly. All the characters have various attachments to each other, but I really enjoyed the developing relationship between Seeker and Whiskey; it constantly changes, but the development is natural and believable. The world of the Fae court is perfectly realized. Everything about it is cruel and beautiful, full of magic without being cartoonish. It is one of my favorite depictions of the Fae world I've ever read. There is more than enough political intrigue to go around, on both sides of the Fade, right up to the very end. My few qualms are minor. Bear kind of skips over some plot points that I felt could have been made clearer. The Merlin choosing a side, for instance, is a plot thread that kind of becomes dropped. Or when Seeker makes her trade with Whiskey; while it eventually becomes clear what she's done, I had no idea up until that point that it was even an option, and I was never clear what the rules governing that trade were, which I found a little annoying. On the other hand, this kind of mystique is part of the world the author has built. Still, those are very minor qualms with an overall very solid book. I look forward to getting my hands on more of Bear's work.
