Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Touching Nalini Singh has changed things up this time around and given us a story involving Psy and Human. I have to say that although I enjoyed this latest installment, I do prefer the novels that are about the Changelings. Sophia is a J (justice) Psy which gives her the ability to retrieve memories from those who commit crime. Most J Psy's don't last long as memories they retrieve leave them with the nightmares and evil of those who committed the acts. Sophia is teetering as her shielding is getting weaker and once it breaks, she will be taken away to be re-conditioned which the Psy see as the only option, her memories erased. She is paired with Max Shannon a human cop, who has been asked by Councilor Nikita Duncan to investigate the death of Psy advisors that are looking more like murder than suicide. Max enlists the help of some of his friends in the Dark River pack to help him and Sophia and together they begin to track the murderer responsible. Max has his own demons to contend with and it really is touching how they both learn, love, support and adapt to one another. We don't really see much of the Changelings or a lot of the council compared to other books in this story, which is okay because the author's focus is on Sophia and Max. We do learn that the psy-net is fracturing and the council seems to be split in two. We also get to see more of Councilor Nikita Duncan, and maybe just maybe she seems not so hard-edged, although still dangerous. All and all, a good story.

About the Book

Return to the powerful, turbulent Psi-Changeling world created by amazingly talented ("Night Owl Romance"), "New York Times"-bestselling author Singh, as a human detective finds himself working the most unlikely of cases--in the dark heart of a Councilor's domain. Original.

Read from the Book

JUSTICE When the Psy first chose Silence, first chose to bury their emotions and turn into ice-cold individuals who cared nothing for love or hate, they tried to isolate their race from the humans and changelings. Constant contact with the races who continued to embrace emotion made it much harder to hold on to their own conditioning. It was a logical thought. However, it proved impossible in practice. Economics alone made isolation an unfeasible goal—Psy might have all been linked into the PsyNet, the sprawling psychic network that anchored their minds, but they were not all equal. Some were rich, some were poor, and some were just getting by. They needed jobs, needed money, needed food. And the Psy Council, for all its brutal power, could not provide enough internal positions for millions. The Psy had to remain part of the world, a world filled with chaos on every side, bursting at the seams with the extremes of joy and sadness, fear and despair. Those Psy who fractured under the pressure were quietly “rehabilitated,” their minds wiped, their personalities erased. But others thrived. The M-Psy, gifted with the ability to look inside the body and diagnose illnesses, had never really withdrawn from the world. Their skills were prized by all three races, and they brought in a good income. The less-powerful members of the Psy populace returned to their ordinary, everyday jobs as accountants and engineers, shop owners and businessmen. Except that what they had
